Awakeri Soccer Club... the Greatest Junior Soccer Club in New Zealand


Report on games played September 11th 1999.

Awakeri Store Stingers returned to good form on Saturday when they secured a win against James Street in the 11th grade A division. Stingers got off to a good start, scoring through Mark Petersen early in the game. However James Street evened the game up just before half time. The hard working Petersen won the game for his team with a goal just after the interval, capitalising on a good ball from Nicholas Haslam. Simon Turner had a good game in midfield and came close to scoring. David Church worked well and picked up the player of the match award. Suzanne McIntyre had a good game in defence, slowing the James street attacks up. Stingers won the game 2 - 1.

In the 13th grade, Brogden Contracing Awakeri Aces all worked well as a team, and earned positive remarks on their game from the referee, despite losing to United 7 - 0. Aces made four good scoring chanmces and deserved some reward for their efforts. Lauren Morton was named player of the match. She made some good runs forward and also did well having a turn as keeper in the second half. Sonya Pettinger had a good game up front as well, linking well with the hard working Nigel Timbs. Adam Priest put in a sound effort in defence, while Liam Fitzgerald and Scott Lowndes also acquited themselves well.

Barney Gray’s Awakeri Rockets had a gut wrenching 3 - 2 loss in their 9th grade game against Opotiki. Rockets put together an excellent team game, causing coach Stu Goodhew to comment, “That’s what makes you appreciate being a soccer coach.” Player of the match Bradley Turner showed wonderful determination, having a full game for the 8th grade, before producing another top effort for Rockets. Simon Barr celebrated the last game of the season with his first goal. Daniel Goodhew scored another to have the scored locked at 2 - 2. The Opotiki keeper made an excellent finger-tip save to push a likely shot over the bar and then Opotiki scored a last minute winner.

Gould Contracting Awakeri Hotshots played well against a well organised and big Opotiki 8th grade team. Cody Fowell played very well in defence and was awarded player of the match. John Hudson had a big game up front, taking on anyone and everyone who tried to get past him. Russel Sisam and Matthew Davies had their usual whole hearted games, commiting themselves fully. Coach Craig Davies comments that all players produced a great season’s soccer and they have all improved huge amounts from the start of the year.

Da Silva Awakeri Autos had a convincing loss to a well-drilled Saints team in the 7th grade. Chris Stanton saved his best game for last, making some good tackles and running hard. Joe Burke played with good determination and Paul Haslam demonstrated how much his confidence and skills have improved. Autos have had tremendous parental support this year, for which coaches Peter Sheather and Chris Stanton are most grateful.

Awakeri’s 6th grade side also lost to Saints. They all worked hard, getting the ball forward well, but couldn’t produce any goals. Maddison Constantine earned the player of the match award. This Saturday, Awakeri Stingers have their last match, against league champions Allandale, with a new early kick-off time of 8.45 a.m. They will then join the remainder of Awakeri’s teams for the club break-up. There will be team photos, games between parents and children, and the presentation of certificates and sportsmanship trophies.
