Awakeri Soccer Club... the Greatest Junior Soccer Club in New Zealand

August 11th 2001

Games played in good spirit were a feature of Saturday’s fixtures for the Awakeri Soccer Club.
David da Silva Awakeri Autos maintained their unbeaten record in the 11th grade C division, with a
comfortable 8 - 0 victory against Opotiki. There was a good spirit throughout the game. All the Autos
players played well, with James Wilson named player of the match. Wilson was one of the goalscorers, as
were Russell Sisam, Hayden Te Moana and Bradley Turner. Defender Kylee Burke and the consistent
Christine Scott also produced top games.
In the 11th grade A division Adamson’s Amcal Pharmacy Awakeri Athletic had no subs to call on against
Ohope, and all came off exhausted. The game was scoreless at half time, but Ohope went ahead and Athletic
did very well to come back and grab a 1 - 1 draw. Athletic forced a number of corners late in the game.
David Wakelin stabbed home the goal from a Jonathan Whitaker corner. Whitaker was player of the match
after making some good saves in goal and then producing a hard-working display in the midfield. Richmond
Brown made two excellent saves in his turn in goal, while Simon Barr and Neil Sax played very steadily in
the midfield. This game was also noteworthy for its good spirit.
Playing on a large field was no obstacle to the Private Asset Management 9th grade Aces. They met
Allandale in a hard fought game and came out the winners by 2 goals to nil. Waylen Skipps was the scorer of
both goals and he went close on many other occasions. He was named player of the day for his excellent
attacking skills. Maia Poananga had her best game and the team is sad to see her move to Auckland. Steven
Law and Jordan Panasewych gave excellent displays, tackling well and showing good commitment.

Total Power Rangers ninth grade played Otakiri at Awakeri. This was an evenly matched game and Awakeri
was unfortunate not to score a goal with the many attempts made by James Attewell, Mitchell Warne and
Nicholas Schuler. Otakiri scored one goal, with the final score being 1 - nil. Chris Stanton had a unstoppable
game and was awarded player of the day. Other players to shine were Vikki Lowndes at the back and
Nicholas Schuler in the forwards.

Awakeri Chiefs did everything but score in their 8th grade game against Allandale. All the Chiefs worked
hard, and had lots of close shots, hitting the woodwork a couple of times. Thomas Williams’s all round efort
saw him named player of the match. He made some good tackles and shots at goal. Harry Cotter’s tackling
was also first rate. Others to do well inlcuded Robert Sonntag, Maddison Constantine and Matthew
Richmond. Both teams contributed to a mood of good sportsmanship.
Twenty six goals shows what the new small sided game sidea is all about. Awakeri Blue Stingers shared two
high scoring games with Ohope Two in the 7th grade, winning 8 - 6 and 11 - 1. All the Stingers players were
in top form. Guy Kamphorst’s good control, passing and shooting had him named player of the day. Jayden
Haddock also had an excellent game. Both teams enjoyed the muddy conditions.
Drain Tech Awakeri Diggers did well in their two 7th grade games against Ohope One. Riki Roia, Gareth
Rowlands, Sam Schuler and Ryan McIntyre all knocked in goals. Riki Roia was the player of the day.
Kawerau met the Alfresco Court Motel Awakeri Tigers in the 6th Grade. The games were close with
Awakeri just coming out on top. Te Naawe Tupe was named player of the day for his excellent
determination. He made some great tackles and was on hand to score a goal. Other scorers for Awakeri
were Leah Sheather, Vinnie Luca, Alex Christensen and Caleb Sheather. Mikaela Hancox also had an
outstanding game. She challenged well for the ball and supported her team mates.
Awakeri Rockets took a while to settle in their 6th grade games with Whakatane One. Better concentration
in the second half saw Rockets score three times in each games, winning 3 - 0 and losing 3 - 4. Thomas
Attewell
scored two goals and earned player of the day. Alex Costello also played up to his best and scored
a nice goal. Tyler Mansell and Mark Morrison did well in defence, while Jordan Steer also contributed well.
