Losing 4 - 0 might not sound great, but for the young Total Power Awakeri Rangers team it shows a significant improvement. Rangers fought hard in their 13th grade game with Ohope, with player of the match Brent Gurran leading the way. Paul Haslam used his speed to advantage, working hard in defence, and getting up to lend a hand on attack too. Fenton Murray put in a good showing as keeper. Rangers were pleased to beat their "best" previous result by four goals.
Also in the 13th grade, Private Asset Management Awakeri Aces and their Saints opponents both started with quick goals. It turned into a very even game. Player of the match Ben Hancox and Vikki Lowndes worked wonders in defence, keeping Saints at bay. Aces stole the match with a goal early in the second half. Matthew Bateson and Vincent Sheather were Aces' scorers. Aces won the game 2 - 1.
Awakeri's 15th grade players were a bit rusty after three weeks off, but they played a top game against Whakatane Black Hawks. Black Hawks won 3 - 2 with Ben McPherson scoring both goals for Awakeri.
In the 11th grade A division, Da Silva Awakeri Autos had a great game with Ohope Cougars. The two teams were locked at 1 - 1 at half time. The end to end play and good passing was a feature of the game. Cougars ran out the winners 3 - 1. Matthew Orr McKeown was outstanding in defence. Stephen Glassbrook's wide ranging running earned him player of the match. He also scored Autos' goal.
Awakeri Diggers had a good frost for their 11th grade B division game against Saints. It was a close affair, ending in a 1 - 1 draw. Player of the match Miles Saitta did very well as Diggers keeper. He was well supported by defender Shaun Musgrave and Rhys Cram. Ricky Hollis was the scorer.
CJ McIndoe Awakeri Dragons won against Ohope's Rovers in the 11th grade B division on Saturday. All goals were scored by Mark Morrison who deservedly went on to be the player of the day. Thomas Attewell was also notable in his play. He positioned himself well and kept running, running and running. Jesse Kerei, despite feeling under the weather, played well in defence. The fitness level of the team is improving and a corresponding improvement in their play is evident.
The Da Silva Awakeri Kingz played Saints at Awakeri in a 9th grade encounter. Kingz were again short of players. However good passing and defending by player of the day Luke Matchitt helped keep Kingz to only one goal down at half time. The arrival of two more players for the second half, allowed Kingz to put more pressure on Saints. Daniel Reeves leveled the score at 1-1, which was the final result.
Also in the 9th grade, Agritech Trailers Awakeri Knights all played well against a strong Ohope Predators side. Predators were leading 2 - 0 at half time and went on to win 5 - 0. Keeper David Klein-Ovink made a number of good saves in goal and earned the player of the match award. Spurred on by plenty of sideline support, Dean Frost, Samuel Burgess and Kurt Turpie all had goes at goal.
The Awakeri Jets started well in their 8th grade game against Ohope Hawks, playing a good team game and getting out to the lead. However the Hawks came back in the second half and won the game 3 -1. For Jets, Oliver Richmond's great work in goal had him named player of the match. Olivia Smits, who improves with every game, played very well in defence.
The Edge Swim School Awakeri Bullets played a very evenly matched game of 7th grade soccer against Paroa, in the sunshine on Saturday. Once again the team was full of stars. Shane Hope shone the brightest, attacking hard and getting the only
goal of the day.
In the 6th grade, Awakeri Tigers battled the flu as well as their Paroa Kauri opposition. It was a good game, with James Thompson grabbing a goal to clinch a 1 - 0 win. Liam Sanson was player of the day; his developing skills helped his team considerably.
