Awakeri Soccer Club... the Greatest Junior Soccer Club in New Zealand

June 13th 2001

Gould Contracting Awakeri Hotshots played Edgecumbe in a catch-up game after school today. The first half had Hotshots dominating possession but not getting the ball past some good defence and excellent keeping, until the final seconds before half time. Ian Sisam did good work down the right and his cross was superbly volleyed in by Matthew Ward. After the break, Ward scored again as Awakeri continued to control the play. However Edgecumbe got a goal back after a break out and created worries of earning a draw as Awakeri could capitalise on their possession. Wave after wave of attack was repelled.
In the final ten minutes, the defence was finally breached again. A Sisam through ball gave Ward a third goal, then good work from Ricky Rowlands gave Ward the chance to stab it past the keeper for number four. In the past three matches, Matthew Ward has scored three hat-tricks, an amazing feat, especially for a centre-midfielder! The final score 4 - 1 to Awakeri Hotshots. In the absence of Jeremy Hawkes (sick), Wayne Groom controlled the defence well. He was well supported by Jono Dawson. Player of the match was Rink Tacoma who had an intelligent game at left half.
