Awakeri Soccer Club... the Greatest Junior Soccer Club in New Zealand

June 16th 2001

Four of Awakeri’s soccer teams braved the wet weather on Saturday and produced good
performances.
In the 13th grade, a fourth successive Matthew Ward hat-trick helped Gould Contracting Awakeri
Hotshots to a win against a below strength Eagel Asmuss Kawerau. Hotshots played good soccer,
passing the ball around well. Cody Hancox earned player of the match with a very good game in
defence, he was ably assisted by the good clearances of Matthew Shaw. Troy Jansen amused the
crowd with a goalkeeping save well outside his area! Hotshots won the game 8 - 0, with the other
scorers being Croydon Little (2), Ian Sisam (2) and Lance Robison.
Adamson’s Amcal Pharmacy Awakeri Athletic played their best soccer of the season, despite
losing 3 - 2 to Opotiki in the 11th grade A division. Athletic had the lead twice, but were behind 3
- 2 at the break. Opotiki had the better of the second half, but excellent goalkeeping from Jonathan
Whitaker and excellent defence kept them out. Player of the match Simon Barr controlled his area
very well, while at left back young Jonathan Hudson played with intelligence and good technique.
Athletic’s goals both came from good through balls from Matthew Adamson. They were finished
well by Darren Groom and Richmond Brown. The game remained with the half time scoreline.
In the 11th grade B division, David da Silva Awakeri Autos never gave up against their strong
James Street opposition despite having only ten players for the game. In the trying conditions,
Autos eventually lost 8 - 2, but as a sign of their resilience, still had enough strength to score their
two goals in the second half. Leonard Sonntag and Russell Sisam were the scorers, while an
outstanding defensive effort saw Hayden Soeters named player of the match. Kylee Burke was
another to do well, using her speed to good advantage in defence.
The Awakeri Chiefs enjoyed the muddy conditions for their 8th grade encounter with Edgecumbe.
Both teams put up a good game, with Edgecumbe scoring the only goal. Chiefs stuck to a better
team shape and this helped their play. Tireless running from Matthew Richmond earned him the
player of the match award. Brent Gurran was another to impress with his effort in defence, he also
made some good intercepts. Thomas Williams and Joshua Mower showed good sportsmanship by
cheerfully playing for the opposition.
