Awakeri Soccer Club... the Greatest Junior Soccer Club in New Zealand

August 17th 2002

The end of the season is looming for Awakeri’s soccer teams, but they are still
producing some good quality play.
In the 6th grade, the Awakeri Kingz had a 1 - 0 win against James Street, courtesy of
a Tautari Merito goal. The Kingz are now gaining the benefits of spreading out more
in their play. Shane Gow showed plenty of determination and had some shots at goal.
He was named player of the match.
Winter illnesses left Alfresco Court Motel Awakeri Tigers short of players for their
7th grade game against Kawerau. Tigers were grateful to an opposition player, Rhys,
who did an excellent job of playing goalkeeper for them. Alex Costello turned on a
committed display and was player of the match. Clive McIndoe was also in top form,
doing well in defence and having a couple of tries at goal. Kawerau’s superior
numbers meant they eventually won the game comfortably.

Positive talk among the Awakeri Drain Tech Diggers players kept them on track in their 8th grade game against Opotiki Volcanics. The entertaining game was locked at 3 - 3 at half time, but Diggers pulled away to win 5 - 3. Player of the match Riki Roia scored four goals and Gareth Rowlands chimed in with the other.
A closely played game between the Awakeri Devils and Edgecumbe in the 8th grade,
resulted in a one all draw .The game was evenly matched, with a lot of running up
and down the field. Some brilliant saves by the Devils keeper, Jayden Haddock, kept
Edgecumbe from any further goals. Player of the match for the Devils went to Joel
Ingle
. He kept the forward pressure on the opposition, and almost scored late in the
second half, in an outstanding effort.
Total Power Services Awakeri Rangers played had entertaining 10th grade game with
Kawerau. Rangers dominated the game, but were unable to find the net on numerous
occasions, resulting in a 2 - 2 draw. The Kawerau keeper played a blinder and kept his
team in the game. The Rangers team all worked hard and their passing game
continues to develop. Wade Matchitt earned player of the match with a tireless effort
up front. Other players to shine were Emma Barr and Kimberley Byres, who passed
the ball around nicely. The goals were scored by James Attewell and Joshua
McCormick.
Determination and team work were the keys for the10th grade Private Asset
Management Awakeri Aces, in their 2 -1 win against James Street Two. Jade Cossey
and Mathew Bateson were the goal scorers for Aces, with Bateson also being named
player of the day for his excellent attacking skills. This was a very even game but the
difference was in the defence where both Joseph Newdick and Jo Burke were very
solid. Others to stand out were Vincent Sheather in goal, who made some excellent
saves, and Mathew Reeves, who covered a lot of ground in attack and defence. Finn
Kamphorst and Robert Sonntag were also in top form.
The Da Silva Awakeri Autos 11th grade team played Allandale at Awakeri. Allandale
only fielded 9 players so Auto's Ryan Johnston and player of the match Hayden
Soeters
evened the numbers up. Autos enjoyed the game, with lots of good passing
and support play apparent. Bradley Turner, Hayden Te Moana and James Wilson
scored three goals each. Anthony Sykes, Russell Sisam and Thomas Turner also got
goals. The final score was 12 - 0 to Autos.
In the Intermediate Girls league, Awakeri Wonderwomen beat Whakatane Two 1 - 0.
It was an exciting game, which flowed from one end to the other. Player of the match
Sarah Macdonald was unlucky not to score early in the match, when she beat the
keeper, but the ball stopped on the line. She did score the winning goal in the second
half, following a great cross from Danniella Palmer. The whole Awakeri team had an
excellent game.
On Saturday the 7th of September, the Awakeri Soccer Club are holding their
break-up and prize giving.
