Awakeri Soccer Club... the Greatest Junior Soccer Club in New Zealand

June 1st 2002

Freezing conditions on Saturday gave Awakeri’s soccer teams a rude awakening.
In the 15th grade, Awakeri Hobbits were at trident for an early kick-off against United.
The Hobbits adjusted to the Antarctic chill well, and playing good soccer got to a 3 - 0
lead by half time. Matthew Ward got his head to a corner, and the dropping ball was put
in the net for the first goal by Sean Wright. Another corner and Ian Sisam volleyed the
ball home with a powerful strike. Wright got the third after a good run and then touching
the ball past the advancing keeper. United came back into the game after the interval
with two goals, to make the final score United 2 , Awakeri Hobbits 3. Sisam was player
of the match, after being instrumental in some excellent passing moves.
Adamson’s Amcal Pharmacy Awakeri 13th grade played away to Allandale with both
teams playing a skilful and exciting game. Numerous attacks on goal by a well-organised
Allandale side in freezing temperatures saw them go to the break 3 - 0 up. Awakeri never
really got going, but some good defence and goal keeping kept the score down. Awakeri
finally got going in the second half with good breaks coming from Troy Jansen and
Jordan McDonald setting up Kelly Stanton and David Wakelin with goals. Player of the
day went to Myron Rowlands for a top effort in the mid field. Second half goalie
Jonathan Whitaker showed top skills, stopping the final score of 4 - 2 getting any bigger.
The Awakeri Intermediate Girls team had to travel to Opotiki and face the strong Queen
Bees team with only ten players. They did well to hold their hosts to 1 - 0 at half time in
an excellent fast flowing game. The Bees eventually took the score to a 4 - 0 win.
Christine Scott was named player of the match, after saving her team several times off the
goal-line as a fullback, and running the ball strongly out of defence. Katie Collins also
played very well in the midfield.
The Da Silva Awakeri Autos 11th Grade played Allandale at Eve Rimmer park.
Allandale challenged the Auto's defence in the first half with the Autos conceding 3 goals
to 1. However in the second half the Autos got warmed up and produced some nice
attacks resulting in three more goals. The final score was 4 - 3 to the Autos. The player of
the day went to Russell Sisam for good running the whole game and 2 goals. Hayden Te
Moana scored the other 2.
In the 10th grade, Total Power Services Awakeri Rangers had a closely fought game with
Ohope. The spectators were entertained with the end to end play, with Ohope eventually
winning 3 - 1. Matthew Reeves scored a good goal for Rangers, and Josh McCormick
worked tirelessly up front. Kimberley Byres earned player of the match for her continued
good form and good linking with her winger.

The Awakeri Hurricanes 9th grade team played James Street Two at home in
cold conditions. Brent Gurran was awarded player of the match for his
strong play all round the field. Matthew Fulton and Destrii Prout both
had good hard working games too. Awakeri were unlucky in their 2 - 0
defeat. The team and coach say goodbye and thanks to Billy Brooks who
played his last game on Saturday.

A very even 8th grade game between the Awakeri Devils and Allandale School resulted in a 2 all draw. The Devils, leading 2 nil at halftime after some good passing and goal shots, let their guard down in the 2nd half, allowing Allandale to score twice. Awakeri were unlucky not to score again with 3 attempts at goal hitting the goal posts.
Player of the match was Guy Kamphorst, who didn't stop running all day.

Drain Tech Awakeri Diggers had a solid 6 - 0 win against Kawerau in the 8th grade.
Gareth Rowlands secured a hat-trick, while Riki Roia (2) and player of the match Ryan
McIntyre
also scored. Taylah Bateson and Mark Burnett also had strong games.
In the 7th grade, Alfresco Court Motels Awakeri Tigers put in a very good team effort to
draw 2 - 2 with Allandale. Vinnie Luca was named player of the match, as he, Clive
McIndoe and Caleb Sheather worked hard to set up chances for the outstanding Leah
Sheather. She duly converted both goals.
6th graders Awakeri Kingz suffered cold conditions in their 1 - 0 loss to James Street.
The team combined well, with Bryce Burnett named player of the match after an
exceptional game. Shane Gow also had a top game.
Awakeri Rockets played a great game against James St Two in the 6th grade. Rockets
were low in numbers with only five players plus an ex Awakeri ring-1n Te Naawe Tupe,
who was a great help. Kurt Turpie and Samuel Burgess both played a strong game, with
Melody McKay in goal for the first half. Both Jennifer Cram and Kelsei Ingle chased the
ball hard all of the first half. It was a real team effort to win with a score of three goals to
James St's 1. Kelsei Ingle was named player of the day.
