Awakeri Soccer Club... the Greatest Junior Soccer Club in New Zealand

September 1st 2001

Awakeri’s soccer teams played their final games on Saturday, with the highlight being
David da Silva Awakeri Autos taking out the 11th grade division C championship.
Autos had a 4 - 0 victory against Whakatane Girls and ended up unbeaten in their
division. The Whakatane Girls team played well and created a number of chances to
score. The talented Hayden Te Moana scored a hat-trick and was named player of the
match. James Wilson scored an excellent goal to round off the win.
In the 11th grade A division, Adamson’s Amcal Pharmacy Awakeri Athletic took the
opportunity to give their hard working defenders a game in the forwards in their game
against James Street. The James Street keeper was in top form and denied them any
goals, although he needed the help of defenders to twice clear the ball from the
goal-line. Daniel Goodhew and Jordan Macdonald enjoyed their game as strikers and
acquitted themselves well. Matthew Adamson made a welcome return to the team and
earned the player of the match award. Sytse Tacoma sportingly played for the
opposition and nearly scored! Kelly Stanton and Ben McPherson were others to play
very well. James Street won the game 1 - 0.
In the 13th grade, Gould Contracting Awakeri Hotshots were at home to Otakiri. This
was an end to end game with plenty of excitement for the spectators. Hotshots opened
up with a good goal. Matthew Ward took the ball into the Otakiri penalty area and
pulled it back for Ian Sisam to drive home. Otakiri pressed hard to equalise and were
denied a number of times by excellent goalkeeping from Cody Hancox. Eventually
their lucky break came when a corner bounced off an Awakeri defender into the goal,
making a 1 - 1 result. Jono Dawson was named Hotshot’s player of the match after a
gritty defensive effort and some constructive play in the forwards in the second half.
Other to do well included Ian Sisam, Rink Tacoma and Wayne Groom.
The Awakeri players can now look forward to their break-up on Sunday the 16th of
September, and the commencement of summer family soccer next term.
