Excellent refereeing was a major contributor to the 10th grade Top Four match
between Ohope One and Da Silva Awakeri Autos. League champions Autos
were affected by illness, but managed to get out to a 2 - 0 half time lead through
outstanding team play. Ohope fought back hard in the second half and the game
ended in a 4 - 2 win to Autos. The Ohope referee kept these two competitive
sides playing in good spirit. For Autos, Liam Richards great defence had him
named player of the match. He was well backed up by keeper Sydney Jones.
Jayden Haddock and Keanu Carter shared the goals.
Drain Tech Awakeri Diggers won their 10th grade game by default against
Whakatane Sharks. Unfortunately for Diggers this is the second week in a row
that no opposition has fronted up.
In the 11th grade, Awakeri Steelers all played well against Whakatane Rangers.
Player of the match Robert Sonntag organised the defence well. Rangers took
the match 4 - 0.
The Total Power Services Awakeri Rangers played Kawerau in the 13th grade.
The first 20 minutes was exciting with both teams attacking well. Kawerau
scored first, with Matthew Reeves equalising soon after. However the Rangers
couldn’t cope with Kawerau’s physical style of play and stood off in defence,
finally losing 7 - 1.
Private Asset Management Awakeri Aces were always going to struggle against
an in form Opotiki C V Cottages 13th grade team. Aces went one goal down in
the first five minutes and defended for long periods. The highlight for Aces was
their excellent attacking, which led to goals to Matthew Bateson and Vincent
Sheather. Bateson was named player of the day for his great work rate and
accurate passing. Paul Haslam and Vikki Lowndes also worked very hard in
defence. Opotiki ran out the winners 10 - 2.
A disciplined and well-structured team game by both sides was the key to an
exciting match when Awakeri NewCom and James Street Cowboys 15th grade
teams played their last game together for this season. Awakeri forwards and
mid field dominated the first half with their backs clearing up any breaks by
James Street. After some close shots on goal, Daniel Goodhew powered one
past the keeper. Paddy Deegan finding the back of the net soon after, following
a top cross from Jarred Scoles.
In the second half James Street put together some excellent passages of play but
Awakeri keeper Simon Barr was up to the task. Awakeri’s backs Brad
Armstrong, Neil Sax and Daniel Goodhew cleared well to the forwards. After
good work from left striker Daniel Jones, Paddy Deegan again got one past the
James Street keeper.
Player of the day went again to Tyler Hunt who has given 100% all season,
creating opportunities for his forwards and getting back in defence when
needed. The final score was 3 - 0 to Awakeri.
In the 6th grade, Awakeri Tigers lost 2 - 4 to Thornton. It was a good game.
Liam Sanson and Joshua Keightley scored the goals for Tigers. Rebekah
Bloxholm earned player of the match for her whole hearted play.
The Edge Swim School Awakeri Bullets continued their good form in the 6th
grade. Nikoli Christensen aimed well with his shooting, getting four goals.
Daniel Perkinson and Tiaan Brownless scored a goal each, bringing their total
score against Allandale to 6 - 0. This team has many star players but Tiaan
Brownless played an amazing game on the field and in goal and was awarded
player of the match.
Awakeri Jets had a close fought 7th grade game with Ohope. Jets pushed
forward and chased the ball well, and had several opportunities. Ohope made
the most of one of their chances to grab a 1 - 0 win. Kale Young was player of
the match for Jets.
The Awakeri Kingz played well in their 8th grade game against Otakiri. Despite
a good first half, Kingz went behind by two goals. They came back to trade
goals in the second half for a 3 - 1 loss. Samuel Burgess scored a good goal for
Kingz and Dean Frost was named player of the match for his work up front.
In the 9th grade, Awakeri Dragons played a strong Allandale side. Dragons did
well to hold them and also score a few goals. Mark Morrison (2) and Ben
Fretwell scored for dragons. Thomas Attewell was named player of the match
for his terrier-like work on defence and on attack. Allandale won the game 7 -
