A number of Awakeris soccer teams were a bit rusty after the holiday
break, but they were pleased to be
back on the pitch again on Saturday.
In the 6th grade, Awakeri Rockets had two good games against Ohope Two. Thomas
Attewells
outstanding play earned him player of the match. Robert Law also played very
well and scored the only goal
for Rockets. Clive McIndoe worked hard for Rockets. Ohope won both games.
Awakeri Blue Stingers had the best game back, with a high scoring effort against
Whakatane One in the 7th
grade. Stingers won the entertaining games 7 - 2 and 3 - 2. Whakatane played
with determination, but the
good passing and calling for the ball gave Stingers the edge. Kararaina Kingi
was named player of the day.
She played well and had some good shots at goal. Keanu Carter excited the crowd
with an overhead
bicycle kick!
Awakeri Chiefs played as well as they have all season, against a strong Ohope
team in the 8th grade. Lindsey
Cotters brave saves in goal in the first half saw him named player
of the match. Glen Askey played his best
game so far. Despite Harry Cotters and Joshua Mowers best efforts
in defence, Ohope took the game 3 -
0.
Total Power Awakeri Rangers 9th grade team met a strong Whakatane One side and
were outclassed, going
down 9 - 0. They played well in the first half, but failed to clear the ball
from in front of goal in the second
half. Players to do well were Bretsche Tacoma with some strong running and passing
up front, and player of
the match Jakob Parker, who held his position well.
Also in the 9th grade, Private Asset Management Awakeri Aces lost 4 - 2 to James
Street. Paul Haslam was
solid taking on bigger opponents than himself and was named player of the match.
Matthew Reeves got
through a lot of work as goal keeper in the second half. Waylon Skipps and Devon
Swart scored the goals.
In the 11th grade A division, Adamsons Amcal Pharmacy Awakeri Athletic
poured on most of the pressure
against Saints, but couldnt convert it into goals. Saints used the through
ball well in the first half to establish
a lead. In the second half, player of the match Jordan Macdonald and
Daniel Goodhew closed down the
Saints strikers. Although Ben McPherson and Richmond Brown scored, Awakeri lost
3 - 2. Kelly Stanton
also had a top game.
In the new 11th grade C division, both the David da Silva Awakeri Autos and
Otakiri teams looked rusty
following the holidays. Autos did enough to win 4 - 0 Hayden Soeters
scored a goal and was named player
of the match. Hayden Te Moana, Bradley Turner and Russell Sisam scored the other
goals.
Gould Contracting Awakeri Hotshots battled valiantly against Allandale in the
13th grade, but eventually
lost 7 - 0. Wayne Groom was a tower of strength in defence and was named
player of the match. Hotshots
did have a number of attacks and brought a good save from an Ian Sisam volley
following a Lance Robison
free kick. Nicholas Law and Jeremy Hawkes also impressed with their gutsy efforts.
