An excellent team effort saw Adamson’s Amcal Pharmacy Awakeri Athletic
dominate play against a depleted top of the table side Allandale in the 13th grade.
Playing with nine players for most of the first half and ten the rest, Allandale did well
to go the break only 1 - 0 down. Awakeri had many shots on goal but a very skilful
Allandale goalie kept all but one out. Hayden Te Moana scored the first goal for
Awakeri.
The game stepped up a notch in the second half with better communication and
finishing by Awakeri. Allandale got good ball forward, but backs Daniel Goodhew,
Max Farmer and Jordan Macdonald were up to the challenge, getting the ball to the
forwards via a well organised mid field. Te Moana scored two more with Ben
McPherson also slotting two past the keeper.
Accurate passing and excellent communication paved the way to Awakeri’s win.
Player of the day went to very deserving Hayden Te Moana for his skilful play, with
Max Farmer and Kelly Stanton also having top games. The final score was 5 - 0 to
Awakeri.
In the Junior High School Girls League, Awakeri travelled to take on the strong
Opotiki College side. Opotiki played well to win the game. However, all the Awakeri
players performed well to limit the score to 3 - 0. Sarah Macdonald earned player of
the match with a typically hard working effort.
The 11th grade Total Power Awakeri Rangers found their winning form again with a
7 - 1 win against Saints. The scorers were Hawea Mansell (3) , Vincent Sheather (2)
and Nicholas Schuler and Chris Stanton each netted once. This was a good
performance, with the forwards working well together. Nicholas Schuler was player
of the match, for his great passing, and ability to cover in many positions. Had it not
been for some fabulous goal keeping from the Saints goalie, the score would have
been much higher.
A very determined 11th grade James Street team caught the Awakeri Aces napping to
score two quick goals from kick off. It took the Aces into the second half before they
regained their composure, and take the lead 3 goals to 2 . This was done with some
sound play from Miles Mc Conway who also received player of the match. However,
a late goal by James Street saw the game end in a 3 all draw.
10th grade Awakeri Hurricanes put on a much improved performance to earn a 1 - 1
draw with Ohope Raiders. Therase Jarrett continues to improve with every game and
she was named player of the match. Not far behind was the Hurricanes goal scorer,
David Ernest, who also had an excellent game. Thomas Williams also impressed with
his solid play in defence.
Da Silva Awakeri Autos did well in their 9th grade game against Kawerau, gaining a
win. The score was 5 goals to 3. Goal scorers were Jayden Haddock (2), Keanu
Carter (2) and Stephen Glassbrook. Autos had a very good first half with all their
goals being scored in the first half of the game. Kawerau fought back in the second
half and Autos had to defend really hard. Autos backs played well, with especially
good defence by Kararaina Kingi. She was the player of the match.
Also in the 9th grade, Draintech Awakeri Diggers had to battle against Opotiki
Volcanics, with the score being locked at 2 - 2 at half time. However Diggers ‘dug it
in’ and went on to win 5 - 2. Gareth Rowlands was in great form, scoring three goals.
Riki Roia chimed in with two as well. Player of the match Taylah Bateson was
outstanding in defence, using his speed to cover wherever needed. Sam Schuler also
had a good game.
In the 8th grade, Private Asset Management Awakeri Tigers battled well against a
strong Allandale team. Caleb Sheather was named player of the day for his excellent
commitment, both in attack and defence. This was a good team effort, but Tigers just
couldn't score. The pressure finally told with Allandale scoring 4 goals. Clive
McIndoe defended well and Vinnie Luca made some great runs.
Also in the 8th grade, Awakeri Steelers had a big win against Paroa. Mark Morrison
was in outstanding form, scoring seven goals! Liam Richards also chimed in with a
hat-trick. Steelers just had enough numbers for their team and had to work hard, but
their superior passing skills created a lot of opportunities.
Awakeri Rockets had a great 7th grade game against Awakeri Kingz. The first half was
scoreless. However, Tautari Merito (2) and Dean Frost put in second half goals to take the
game for Kingz. Isaac Martin, showed his skills and was named player of the match for
Rockets. Daniel Reeves and Matthew Eveleens also played well for Rockets. Merito
earned the player of the match award for Kingz. Blake Cossey and Christopher
Walker also had excellent games. The score was 3 - 0 to the Awakeri Kingz.
Awakeri had an exciting 6th grade game against Kawerau. Oliver Richmond scored
early for Awakeri, and Sam Holani delighted his team by scoring a late winner to take
the game 2 - 1. Jennifer Cram was named player of the match for Awakeri, while
Nikki Turpie and Konar Jarrett also played well too.
In the 15th grade, Awakeri Mysterios had the bye. However, they will look forward to
their coming clash with league leaders Allandale.
