A number of Awakeri teams got to play on Saturday, while ground conditions caused
many fixtures to be called off.
The pouring rain vanished just on kickoff between C J McIndoe Awakeri Dragons
and Kawerau. The sun even fought its way through to light up this exciting 11th
grade
game. They were well matched with a 5 all draw. Awakeri took on an early lead,
but
Kawerau kept up a gutsy performance and crept back up. The two teams were scoring
neck and neck for the final quarter of the game. Jessi Kerei, one of the new
Dragons
players, put in a committed performance in the backs and went on to be named
player
of day.
In another 11th grade game that could have gone either way, Awakeri Diggerss
eight
players put in a good team effort against Allandale Aces. Player of the match
Rhys
Cram led the way and Sam Schuler knocked in a goal, but Aces took their chances
to
win 2 - 1. Terri-Anne Hollis impressed with her work as goalkeeper in the second
half..
Agritech Trailers Awakeri Knights played extremely well against the formidable
Whakatane Panthers in the 9th grade. The Knights opened the scoring with a nice
goal by Christopher Walker. The Panthers answered back about five minutes later
with their first goal. In the second half it was Kurt Turpie who scored for
the Knights.
Once again the Panthers equalised a few minutes later. Some very good saves
by
David Klein Ovink and his opposite prevented the score from being higher. The
final
score of 2 - 2 was a great reflection of the game. Knights player of the match
went to
Jesse Ingle for a tremendous improvement in his game.
In the 8th grade, Awakeri Jets were at home to Whakatane Sonics. Jets had to
defend
hard in the first half, and Sonics did well to score twice. Joshua Klein-Ovink
came out
of goal in the second half and attacked well. Despite his player of the match
efforts
and some good shots from Sam McPherson and Bradley Bateson, Sonics held on to
win 2 - 0.
In the 13th grade, the young Total Power Awakeri Rangers team did well in the
first
half against United Gooder Kawerau. Rangers made them work for their first goal
and
held Kawerau to 4 - 0 at half time. This shows steady improvement for the Rangers
team, the sideline supporters getting excited by some good runs forward. In
the
second half Kawerau took control to record a comfortable win. Lindsey Cotter
was
Rangers player of the match for his hard work in the mdifeld. His combination
with
front runner Gareth Rowlands is developing well.
Thomas Holani scored the only goal for The Edge Swim School Awakeri Bullets,
which won the game against Kawerau 7th grade. Thomas showed real skills and
determination throughout the game. Joshua Keightly won player of the day for
skillfully taking the ball away from the opposition and taking it up the
field. Joshua has had injuries for the past two weeks, but he has been loyal
to his team and turned up early, warmed up and played, both times. No amount
of water would hold this awesome Bullets team back.
