Awakeri’s soccer teams were involved in plenty of goalscoring action on Saturday.
A highlight was a second consecutive hat-trick by Jayden Haddock. He helped his 9th
grade Da Silva Awakeri Autos team to a healthy win against Ohope Stingers. Stephen
Glassbrook got into the goals as well, netting four times, and player of the match
Keanu Carter also put away a couple. Carter’s passing and positional play was
excellent. Kararaina Kingi backed them up with a sound game in defence.
Fellow 9th grade team Draintech Awakeri Diggers did well too. Solid defence and
good passing marked their efforts as they beat Ohope Kingz 3 - 1. Player of the match
Sam Schuler scored for Diggers, as did Riki Roia and Gareth Rowlands. Mark Burnett
was another to have an excellent game.
In the 10th grade, Awakeri Hurricanes had quite a bit of time on attack, and they lost
a close game 1 - 0 to the James Street Dragons. Player of the match Matthew Fulton
gave one hundred per cent throughout. Others to do well were Shelly McIndoe and
David Ernest.
Some excellent finishing in front of goal, was a highlight of the 11th grade Total
Power Services Awakeri Rangers game with Allandale. Vincent Sheather was named
player of the day, netting 4 goals and being a provider for 2 others. Others to get on
the score sheet in their 8-0 win, were Hawea Mansell, Matthew Richmond, James
Attewell, and Sean McLean. In defence Nicholas Schuler and Joseph Newdick made
some excellent tackles and were able to feed the ball through to the forwards.
Also in the 11th grade, Awakeri Aces won convincingly against Otakiri Wildcats, the
final score being 8 - 1. Aces played with good team work and competent passing to
each other. Player of the day went to Madison Constantine who in the first half played
a sound game in defence and in the second half played in the forwards showing good
ball skills and having plenty of shots at goal .
This week saw a well-polished performance from Awakeri Adamson’s
Pharmacy 13th Grade team against James Street Globes. With two main strikers
away, they showed the depth of talent. Accurate passing, great positional play and
solid defence were the key to shutting out the opposition for the full sixty minutes.
Hayden Te Moana, Russell Sisam and Bradley Turner continually stretched the
Globes defence with help from good ball forward from Kelly Stanton, Daniel
Goodhew and Jonathan Whitaker. Good positional play from the Awakeri backs and
midfield allowed the goalie to have a restful day and stopped some excellent runs by
the Globes forwards. Te Moana opened the scoring for Awakeri with a lofted ball
over the head of the Globes goalie. Sisam and player of the day Turner combined well
up front with Sisam scoring twice and Turner once. It was altogether an excellent
performance from the whole team. To their credit the Globes never gave up. The final
score was 4 - 0 to Awakeri.
!n the 15th grade, Awakeri Mysterios didn’t have to play to pick up the points, with
their Opotiki opposition defaulting.
Awakeri sixth grade played well against Whakatane Transformers to record a 0 - 0
draw. Jennifer Cram did well in defence, showing skill and enthusiasm against strong
opposition. Player of the match Konar Jarrett was awesome on attack, nearly scoring
twice. It was a good all round team effort.
In the 7th grade, Awakeri Rockets played Kawerau and lost 3 -1 despite brilliant
efforts by player of the day Rory MacGregor. Daniel Reeves had a great game on
defence clearing the ball well too.
The Awakeri Kingz had a very even 7th grade game against SKF Kawerau. James
Muncaster earned player of the match with some great defence. Up front Blake
Cossey played well too. Kawerau won the game 2 - 0.
In the 8th grade, Awakeri Steelers did very well, wining 5 - 0 against James Street
Pythons. Mark Morrison stood out, scoring four goals. The last one was a cracker, a
snap shot with his left foot. Tyler Mansell’s endless running saw him named player of
the match, while goalkeeper Emma Bennett was safe in her work.
Private Asset Management Awakeri Tigers had a tough 8th grade game against James
Street. Tigers went down 1 - 0, in their first loss for the season. Player of the match
Vinnie Luca showed good attacking skills. He came close to scoring a number of
times.
