Awakeri Soccer Club... the Greatest Junior Soccer Club in New Zealand

August 26th 2000

Only two of the Awakeri Soccer Club’s teams braved the miserable conditions on Saturday morning.

In the 7th grade, Peter Clark Ltd Awakeri had quite a battle with Whakatane Bigimons. Awakeri had lots of opportunities in the first half, but couldn’t score, while Bigimons had more of the play in the second half. The final score was a 0 - 0 draw. The Awakeri players were all named player-of-the-match.

Steady rain kept the spectators huddled under shelter and umbrellas as Awakeri Store Strikers played Edgecumbe in the 13th grade. Strikers got off to a flying start when Simon Turner dribbled his way into the penalty area and scored. However, Edgecumbe came back into the game well, with Croydon Little leading the way. They got out to a 3 - 1 lead before Strikers started to believe in themselves again. Good work by Lisa Lowndes led to a cross to Carrington Brown and he made no mistake from in front of goal. Edgecumbe scored again, but Brown replied again to keep the game interesting. In the end Edgecumbe won 5 - 3. Lowndes was named player-of-the-match after wholehearted effort. Matthew Barr did well in his half game in goal, while Jamie Stanton and Turner both had top games in the midfield.

Many of the teams have now finished their scheduled matches and will be waiting for the club break-up to complete their seasons. However, the 11th and 13th grade teams still have matches to play.
