The winter ills had a number of Awakeri’s soccer teams low on numbers on Saturday,
but some exciting games still eventuated.
Total Power Services Awakeri Rangers continued their unbeaten run in the 13th
grade. Rangers were leading 4 - 0 at half time against Allandale. However Allandale
played better in second spell and ran them close. The game ended at 5 - 4 to Rangers.
Player of the match for Rangers was Evan Hunt, earned through some good passing.
Goals were scored by Evan Hunt, Ryan Johnston, Matthew Reeves and Hayden
Reeves (2).
In the 11th grade, Awakeri Steelers met the high flying Ohope Two team. Steelers all
competed very well and put Ohope under pressure. Ohope led 2 - 0 at half time, and
Steelers did well to keep them goal-less in the second half. Joey Roia was named
player of the match for a full-on effort.
In the 10th grade, Da Silva Awakeri Autos continued their impressive form, against
Ohope One, who are also doing well. A great team effort meant player of the match
was shared. Autos used excellent positional play to win the game 3 - 0. Stephen
Glassbrook (2) and Alex Christensen scored the goals. Autos kept Ohope out through
solid defence from Matthew Orr-McKeown and Jemma Shaw, and good keeping by
Jayden Haddock.
Drain Tech Awakeri Diggers had an excellent game in their 10th grade match at
Opotiki. Good passing got Diggers out in the lead, but Opotiki came back well at the
end to even it up in a 3 - 3 draw. Player of the match Cameron Rio-Kumeroa had a
stand out game. He made some excellent saves in his turn in goal, then defended well
and even scored when he came out on the field. Gareth Rowlands and Sam Schuler
put away the other goals.
Awakeri Dragons had difficulty even getting to Opotiki for their 9th grade game. the
gorge was blocked and then the travellers ran into Monty’s Revenge. They raced out
onto the pitch when they got there and ended up winning 5 - 0. Some goalkeeper
training through the week paid dividends and kept the home team out. Player of the
match Khyron Prout and Clive McIndoe both played even though they were sick.
Mark Morrison (3) and Ben Fretwell (2) were the scorers.
Awakeri Kingz had an 8th grade thriller with Saints. Saints got out to a 2 - 0 lead,
then Kingz came back to even it up. Dean Frost scored with a left foot screamer, and
James Muncaster, who was named player of the match for his midfield work, scored a
good goal. Saints got a last minute break and grabbed the winner, 3 - 2.
Awakeri 7th Grade Jets played Ohope Two, who convincingly won score-wise. Both
teams covered plenty of field and a lot of running around was done. Konar Jarrett
scored a great goal for the Jets, and player of the match went to Zac Fretwell.
It was another spirited effort from The Edge Swim School Awakeri Bullets in the 6th
grade against a well organised Kawerau team. A determined effort from Cameron
Shakes
won him player of the match. Thomas Holani’s first goal of the season, even
though an “own goal” did not harm the winning of the match by 2 - 1 for Bullets.
Both goals were scored by the powerful Nikoli Christensen, with good support from
Tiaan Brownless.
Awakeri Tigers enjoyed their 6th grade game against Kawerau Two. Daniel Gow
earned player of the match and scored the goal for Tigers, in what was a 2 - 1 win for
Kawerau. Mekaela Learmond did well to play, even though she was unwell.
