Awakeri Soccer Club... the Greatest Junior Soccer Club in New Zealand

Awakeri Hobbits played 15th grade league leaders Allandale on
Saturday. They gave
a good account of themselves and were unlucky not to take the lead in the first
half.
Player of the match Matthew Ward narrowly missed with a delicate header,
and Sean
Wright had a run-away and ended up hitting the post with the ball rebounding
into the
Allandale keepers arms. Allandale took the lead with a long shot that
went over the
keepers head. In the second half, Allandale had more territorial advantage
and scored
a couple of soft goals and a good one to win the game 4 - 0. For Hobbits, Wards
workrate was outstanding, while Nicholas Haslam, Simon Turner and Sean Wright
also had top games.
In the Intermediate Girls league, Awakeri had an exciting 3 - 0 win against
Whakatane One. Player of the match Philippa Haslam scored one goal and
set up
another for star striker Danniella Palmer. Emma Searle also scored with a powerful
shot over the goalies head, following a nice cross from Christine Scott,
who had
another strong game in the midfield. The win was built on an excellent team
performance.
13th grade Adamsons Amcal Pharmacy Awakeri Athletic played a friendly
game
with Allandale, as the league is being split up. It was an excellent game with
lots of
opportunities for both teams. Ben McPherson and Matthew Adamson scored for
Athletic.
The spectators were well entertained by the 11th grade clash between Da Silva
Awakeri Autos and Opotiki. James Wilson and Leonard Sonntag scored the
goals for
Autos, to gain a 2 - 2 draw. Wilsons non-stop running and accurate passing
had him
named player of the match. Hayden Reeves did well at the other end, making some
good saves in his turn in goal.
Awakeri Hurricanes 9th grade team had an extremely challenging encounter with
Edgecumbe on Saturday. From the first blow of the whistle the Awakeri team were
on
defence and they basically defended for the whole game. As the helpless parents
looked on, the team kept their shape and went on to a nil all draw. The whole
team
put in a great effort and delighted their coach with the end result. Player
of the day
went to Lindsey Cotter who never let the troops down with his excellent
saves in goal.
In the 8th grade, Drain Tech Awakeri Diggers all played well in their 2 - 0
win against
Otakiri. Riki Roia and Gareth Rowlands put away the goals, while Logan Munro
also
created a number of chances. Taylah Batesons good passing saw him
named player
of the match.
Awakeri Steelers lost an exciting 7th grade game against Saints, 3 - 4. The
teamwork
and passing had everyone feeling happy by the games end. Liam Richards
had
another classy game, while Mark Morrison earned player of the match with
some
good long shots and general good play.
Alfresco Court Motel Awakeri Tigers played very well in their 7th grade game
against
James Street Two. Leah and Caleb Sheather and Robert Law scored goals to grab
a 5
- 0 win. Clive McIndoes good passing and developing positional
sense had him
named player of the match.
In the 6th grade, Awakeri Rockets played against Ohope in cold windy conditions.
They lost 3 nil, but never gave up. Jennifer Cram and Kelsei Ingle chased after
the
ball and showed some great attacking skills. Samuel Burgess was named
player of the
day for his awesome achievement in the goal.
Also in the 6th grade, the Awakeri Kingz played Ohope Bullets. Good concentration
and tackling earned Jesse Ingle player of the match. Tautari Merito and
Dean Frost
also had very good games.
