Awakeri Soccer Club... the Greatest Junior Soccer Club in New Zealand

Report on games played May 27th 1999

There were lots of smiles around the Awakeri Soccer club on Saturday, as many teams tasted success.

Carrington Brown was the toast of his 13th grade team Awakeri Store Strikers, as his four goals gave them their first win of the season. Strikers were at home to Whakatane 3 and they put it all together in the early morning dew. Brown used his pace to advantage as he twice broke clear of the visitors’ defence to score before half time. After the break, Whakatane came back well and evened the game up with two goals of their own. However good play from the midfield kept Brown with a steady supply of ball. Jamie Stanton, who had an excellent game in centre midfield, provided him with another opportunity, and the resulting shot brought a tremendous save from the keeper. In the end, Brown scored twice more to make the final score 4 - 2. He thoroughly deserved player-of-the-match, but it was a top performance from the whole team. Mitchell James and Harrison Brown played their best games of the year in midfield, while Simon Turner twice went close to scoring.

In the 11th grade A division, Gould Contracting Awakeri Hotshots wasted little time in their match with Allandale. Wayne Groom scored a beauty with his left foot after five minutes. He later scored another to earn player-of-the-match, with his brother Darren also getting on the score sheet. Neil Sax had a good first half on the field and then made a brave save in goal in the second half. Raniera Mason showed talent in lead up work as Hotshots went on to win 4 - 1. Jonathon Dawson and Jonathan Whitham also did well, and are starting to use the width of the pitch well.

Adamson’s Amcal Pharmacy Awakeri Athletic had a good win against Allandale in the 11th grade B division. Ben McPherson scored a hat-trick, while Kelly Stanton was named player-of-the-match. Her excellent running and ability to put the ball through to the strikers helped Mark Ernest and others to profit. Myron Rowlands and Matthew Adamson had top games, and Richmond Brown did a good job linking between the backs and the forwards. Athletic won the game 7 - 0.

The David Da Silva Awakeri Autos 9th grade played Edgecumbe at Awakeri. Russell Sisam made several run away attacks at Edgecumbe's goal with two good goals resulting. At the other end of the field, Bradley Turner was reading the game well with solid defence as a back in the first half and two hard saves as goalie in the second. He was player of the day for his efforts. Kelly Whitham also had a good game playing up front and worked well finding spaces to run into. The final score was 2 - 0.

Awakeri Magic 8th grade team battled a strong southerly wind in their encounter with James Street . The first half was very even, but, in the closing seconds Chelsie Pettinger scored a nice goal, which proved to be the only goal of the game. Vincent Sheather was very strong in defence and made some great tackles. Judah Marshall had his best game of the season and is improving his positional play. Another to stand out was Jade Cossey ,who covered a lot of ground in the game. For her great efforts all around the field, Chelsie Pettinger was named player-of-the-match.

In the 7th grade, Awakeri Blues had a 3 - 1 win against Allandale Rockets. Selena Shaw earned player-of-the-match for her excellent running, she covered a lot of ground. Devon Swart again scored a hat-trick, and Matthew Fulton had a good game too.

Peter Clark Ltd Awakeri played a skilful James Street team in the 7th grade in a game that was played in excellent spirit. Player-of-the-match Lindsey Cotter set the example for his team with some hard tackling, and they followed suit and all defended well. Jesse Diprose played his last game for Awakeri before he moves, and he tried very hard in goal. David Ernest was another to shine, showing the experience of playing last season. Allandale won the game 3 - 0.

Awakeri Hurricanes almost set up camp in their opposites half in their 6th grade game against Edgecumbe. However it was Edgecumbe that scored twice to win the game. Hurricanes all played well, with the skilful Leah Sheather named player-of-the-match. Kate McConway worked hard during the game, while Sam Schuler showed the value of being a natural defender.

Also in the 6th grade, Awakeri Draintech Diggers played Paroa. The Paroa team were a little overwhelmed at first, but they gained some confidence later in the game and played well. Liam Richards scored a goal, and sportingly also played for the opposition for part of the game. He was named player-of-the-match. Riki Roia had a golden run, scoring five times, with Sydney Jones (2) and Kararaina Kingi also putting in the goals.
