Awakeri Soccer Club... the Greatest Junior Soccer Club in New Zealand
Report on games played August 28th 1999.
Awakeri’s younger aged soccer teams participated in the well organised Edgecumbe fun day on Saturday. The highlight for many was the number of games they got to play and receiving a certificate and a chocolate bar at the end.
Awakeri’s 6th grade team thoroughly enjoyed themselves. They had two wins and a loss. They also played their parents in a gap in the draw and shared the goals, one each. Nathan Hughes’s super efforts had him named player of the day.
7th grade Da Silva Awakeri Autos had a good time. They drew with Opotiki, which was a big improvement on the last time they met. They also had a couple of close losses and a 1 - 0 win, thanks to a Vikki Lowndes goal.
Barney Gray’s Rockets had two wins and three losses in the 9th grade section. They all played well. Awakeri’s competitive teams played their league fixtures, and all ended up on the wrong end of the score sheet.
Brogden Contracting Awakeri Aces held their 13th grade Whakatane opposition to 3 - 1 at half time with a good determined effort. Carrington Brown scored for Aces with a runaway. Aces ran out of steam in the second half to eventually lose 8 - 1. Goalkeeper Mark Brogden made some excellent saves and clearances and earned player of the match. Hikitene Kingi made his presence felt on the wing, while other to perform well included Sarah Dawson, Nigel Timbs and Mitchell James.
Awakeri Store Stingers were pretty lethargic in their 11th grade A Division game at Kawerau. They could easily have scored twice in the opening ten minutes, after good pressure set up chances in front of goal. Kawerau’s fast breaking forwards then got away on a counter attack and scored. Kawerau went on to win 3 - 0. Stingers player of the match was Cody Hancox. He had a very good first half in goal and then was everywhere covering in the defence after the interval. Mark Petersen tried hard all game and his good level of communication with his team mates was encouraging. Simon Turner worked hard at right half too.
Total Power Services Awakeri Rangers played a strong Opotiki side in the 11th grade B Division. Rangers held out well in the first half, a Wayne Groom goal giving them a 1 - 1 half time score. They couldn’t keep it up for the whole game though, Opotiki winning 3 - 1. Player of the match Jared Pettinger had a lot of work to do keeping out the Opotiki shots at goal. Playing with credit were: Kate Ernest, Harrison Brown, Matthew Barr, Jonathan Dawson and Troy Jansen. This Saturday Rangers are in the play-offs for their division. They meet the high flying James Street team at Awakeri at 10 a.m.
