Awakeri Soccer Club... the Greatest Junior Soccer Club in New Zealand

April 28th 2001

“Yes! The soccer season is underway!” seemed to be the mood of Awakeri’s soccer teams as they swung into action on Saturday. In the 11th grade A division, Adamson’s Amcal Pharmacy Awakeri Athletic looked fairly rusty but had enough individual talent to secure a 4 - 2 win against Saints. Darren Groom, David Wakelin and Ben McPherson (2) scored the goals. Player-of-the-match for Athletic was right fullback Jonathan Hudson. He won the ball well and then looked to pass it to his team-mates. Jonathan Whitaker was another to show good skills. He almost scored a memorable goal, beating three defenders before unleashing a good shot. However the Saints goalkeeper pulled off a good save.

David da Silva Awakeri Autos met Allandale in the 11th grade B division and came away with a 1 - 1 draw. Autos will need to look at improving their positional play, but did well enough in their first proper outing. Russell Sisam scored a good goal, while Philippa Haslam earned player-of-the-match for her tireless running in the midfield.

In the 9th grade, Private Asset Management Awakeri Aces had a good second half against Allandale and ended up winning 6 - 3. Waylon Skipps impressed with his crosses into the middle, and Vincent Bayliss made some good saves in goal. Player-of-the-match Devon Swart worked very hard, while Jade Cossey kept the spectators entertained.

Total Power Services Awakeri Rangers had a fast and furious 9th grade game at Otakiri. They certainly enjoyed their game, as did the spectators who were well entertained. Conrad Gurran showed out in his first game of soccer. he grew in confidence through the game and was deservedly named player-of-the-match. Otakiri won the game 1 - 0, but Rangers went close to scoring a number of times. Bretsche Tacoma made some great runs onto passes from Chris Stanton. Rangers look like they will have an enjoyable and successful season.

In the 8th grade, Awakeri Chiefs had a 3 - 2 win against Allandale. Player-of-the-match Matthew Fulton chased the ball up well and put away two goals. It was pleasing to see the team developing from their experience last season, and already looking more mature in their play. Robert Sonntag was the other goal scorer. Thomas Williams tackled well and Matthew Gooch tried hard in his first game of soccer.

Drain Tech Awakeri Diggers enjoyed the new format for the younger ages. This involves a squad being split into two 4 aside teams and playing two games simultaneously against their opponents. Diggers played Edgecumbe in the 7th grade, with Gareth Rowlands named player-of-the-day for his numerous attempts at goal. Hannah Hudson played very well, Ryan McIntyre put a lot of effort into his game. Riki Roia scored the only goal for Diggers.

Awakeri Gems played Allandale in the 7th grade. They are not only improving in working together, but also thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Zara Fowell played well, listened to her coach’s advice, and was in the right place to score the only goal.

In the 6th grade, Awakeri Rockets all played well against Saints. Jordan Steer was outstanding and earned the player-of-the-day award. Tyler Mansell and Thomas Attewell showed plenty of promise.

Alfresco Court Motel Awakeri Tigers had an exciting 6th grade game at Allandale. Jaime Clark is improving all the time and was named player-of-the-day. Vinny Luca got well involved with the play, while Leah Sheather and Liam Richards showed good control and determination.
