A standout individual performance by 11th grade player Terri-Anne Hollis was
the highlight of Awakeri's soccer games on Saturday.
Awakeri's 13th grade Private Asset Management Aces team got their season back
on track with a good 5 - 2 win against a spirited Allandale side. The scorers
for Aces were Mathew Bateson (2), Vincent Sheather (2) and Matthew Reeves. Player
of the day was Glen Askey who played very well in defence. Aces looked very
good when they passed the ball and moved into space.
Also in the 13th grade, Total Power Services Awakeri Rangers tried hard and
enjoyed their game despite losing to Opotiki. The Rangers defenders showed some
good signs of improvement. Oliver Butler was named player of the match for his
good effort at left half. He got the crowd's hopes up with a couple of good
runs down the wing. Opotiki was gracious in their win, the players appreciating
the efforts of the young Awakeri side.
Da Silva Awakeri Autos had a hard 11th grade A division game against Opotiki.
A Jayden Haddock goal had Autos ahead at half time, but Volcanics scored to
grab a 1 - 1 draw. Zoe Johnston earned player of the match with her determination
in defence. She held her position well and didn't back off from some tough challenges.
The 11th grade B division match between Awakeri Diggers and Otakiri was transferred
Edgecumbe due to the recent flooding. The game started well for Diggers, with
Terri-Anne Hollis slotting her first ever goal in six years of playing for Awakeri.
She quickly followed this with her second, third and fourth goals to help the
team to a 6 -1 victory. Other notables were Miles Saitta with his first goal
for the team and Shaun Musgrave who played excellently in the midfield. Player
of the day, a unanimous decision by all present, was the goal scoring Terri-Anne
  Hollis.
Two consecutive weeks with rain has seen the CJ McIndoe Awakeri 11th grade Dragons
miss out on their practices. However this did not reflect in their play on Saturday.
They won 4 - 1 against Opotiki. Mark Morrison played to his usual high standard,
scoring three of the four goals. Caleb Sheather and Morrison worked well together
with good passes allowing the goal scoring to occur. Jarrod Butler had his debut
performance in goal, learning very quickly to boot it forcefully down the wing.
Leah Sheather was player of the day for her strong defensive play. She made
a particularly impressive flying save in front of the goal. Thomas Attewell's
fitness was in evidence with his strong midfield play.
The two Awakeri 9th grade teams, Agritech Trailers Awakeri Knights and Da Silva
Awakeri Kingz, had an enjoyable game together. Both teams had lots of shots
at goal. The most spectacular was Sam Burgess's shot over the goalie's head
from nearly halfway. Nicci Hammond was player of the day for Kingz as he kept
to his midfield position well and sent good passes to the strikers. Dean Frost
was player of the day for Knights. His hard chasing of the ball also brought
him a goal. The Knights won 4-1 with smiles all round at the end.
Awakeri Jets started their 8th grade game well at Opotiki. Joshua Klein-Ovink
put the ball in the net. The Opotiki team then used their team game to good
effect and put a lot of pressure on the Jets. The Jets defenders worked overtime
and keeper Jade Hollis pulled off some good saves. Despite some good breakouts
from player of the match Cameron Morrison and Sam McPherson, Opotiki took the
  game 3 - 1.
In the youngest age group, Awakeri Tigers gelled well in their 6th grade game
with James Street. Some good passing helped James Thompson get a hat-trick.
Cameron Shakes and Daniel Perkinson also scored goals in a 5 - 0 win. Joshua
Ruiter put in a lot of effort and was named player of the match.
