August 2nd 2003
Awakeris competitive teams had some pleasing victories on Saturday, with
a number
of hat-tricks helping the cause.
In the Junior High School Girls league, Awakeri were at home to Whakatane High
School. WHS opened the scoring, but Awakeri bounced back when Kelly Stanton
robbed a defender and scored with a strong shot. In the second half, Danniella
Palmer
turned on her special magic to score a hat-trick, and the visitors could only
manage
one in reply. A lot of the credit for this was due to player of the match for
Awakeri,
Ellice Shaw. Her defence was very staunch. Awakeri won the match 4 - 2.
In the 15th grade, Awakeri Mysterios got off to a copybook start against Kawerau.
Reender Buikema took the ball to the line
before pulling it back for Matthew Ward to
side-foot into the net. Buikema scored twice more before half time when the
Kawerau
keeper could not keep out strong shots. Ward scored his second, turning in a
good
cross from the right from close range, before Buikema secured his hat-trick
with
another powerful strike. The dynamic Nicholas Law earned player of the match
with a
typically tireless display.
Awakeri Adamsons Pharmacy 13th Grade and Saints began the A Division round
of
the competition with a tough and entertaining game. Both sides showed good fitness
and ball skills in an evenly fought match. There were a number of opportunities
in the
first half, but sound defence and excellent goal keeping saw the teams go to
the break
at nil all.
The second half saw Awakeri start to dominate play with Ben McPherson and player
of the day Hayden Te Moana getting around the Saints mid field to put some nice
shots on goal. Continued pressure saw Awakeri awarded a penalty after a Saints
back
handled in goal. McPherson converted it well. Te Moana scored next for Awakeri
after a brilliant run down the right side, his shot was just out of reach of
the keeper.
This was followed three minutes later by an accurate lofted shot that beat the
keeper
but two Awakeri players were off side.
Mid field players Bradley Turner, Kelly Stanton and Max Farmer all put in a
100%
effort. The final score was 2 - 0 to Awakeri.
The Awakeri Aces played a home game against the Whakatane Rovers in the 11th
grade. In the first half Rovers put pressure on Aces defence to lead 1
- nil at half
time. After the break Aces came out firing with Mathew
Bateson scoring a quick hat
trick, which lifted the Aces game. Two more goals by Matthew Reeves and
Finn
Kamphorst sealed the game at 5 - 2. Player of the match was Ben Hancox for his
outstanding defence.
Also in the 11th grade, Total Power Awakeri Rangers responded well to their
half
time pep talk, to finally win 3 goals to 1 against Whakatane Rangers. In the
first half
they had struggled through, making lots of basic errors and not finding each
other
with their passes. This all changed early in the second half with James Attewell
and
Matthew Richmond making some good runs. They linked up well with Vincent
Sheather, who went on to score a hat-trick. Paul Haslam and Kimberley
Byres both
had solid games too.
Awakeri Hurricanes had quite a good first half against Otakiri tornadoes in
the 10th
grade. They were only down 1 - 0 at half time. However, Otakiri proved too strong
in
the second half to win 5 - 0 in the end. Shelly McIndoe was named player of
the
match for her efforts. Kane Wakefield also did well, taking the ball forward
on some
good runs.
In the 9th grade, Da Silva Awakeri Autos had to work hard to make up for missing
some players. They had a tough game against Whakatane, with the whole team
playing well enough to share the player of the match award. Keanu Carter scored
for
Autos, with Whakatane winning the game 2 - 1.
In the 8th grade, Private Asset Management 8th Grade Awakeri Tigers fought out
a
nil all draw with Saints. For Tigers, Ben Fretwell was named player of the day
for his
excellent passing. Alex Costello was another to play well in this evenly matched
game. He tackled well and was supported by his team mates. This was a great
improvement on last weeks game.
Also in the 8th grade, Awakeri Steelers played well, but were over powered by
the
classy Otakiri Pythons team. Tyler Mansells hard work for the full game
earned him
player of the match. Otakiri won the game 8 - 0.
In the 7th grade, Awakeri Rockets played against Edgecumbe and won 2 - 1. with
excellent goals by Rory MacGregor and Luke Matchitt. Isaac Martin also played
well.
Coach Shannon Burgess was awarded player of the day by the happy spectators!
The Awakeri Kingz all played well, and had a very even 7th grade game with
Kawerau. The game soared from end to end with Kawerau grabbing a last minute
winner, taking the game 1 - 0. Player of the match Christopher Walker was
outstanding in the midfield for Kingz. Jesse Ingle and James Muncaster also
had
excellent games.
Awakeri 6th grade was defeated by Paroa, 2-4. Paroa were strong but Awakeri
played
a great defensive game. Sam McPherson scored our first goal and Cameron Morrison
scored the 2nd after running the length of the field, using fantastic ball skills
and
footwork. Cameron is a well deserved player of the day as he was outstanding
the
entire game, even after injury.
