Report of games 30 August 2003

Most Awakeri teams played their final games of the season on Saturday. The 13th
grade team sealing their championship victory was the highlight.
The final 13th grade game of the season between 1st division sides Allandale and
Adamson’s Amcal Pharmacy Awakeri was a very even match with both sides
displaying good communication. The teams played a fast and clean game with
numerous shots on goal in the first quarter.
Twenty minutes in, James Wilson scored the only goal of the match after another
strong run from Kelly Stanton and a pinpoint cross from Ben McPherson. The
defence of both teams was strong with Jonathan Whitaker and second half goalie
Russell Sisam keeping out some strong attempts by a fired up Allandale side.
Player of the day went to very committed Cody Fowell, who has shown excellent
development over the season.
In this round of the competition Awakeri has gone unbeaten which gives them
maximum points and the 13th grade championship.
The final score was 1 - 0 to Awakeri.
In the 15th grade, Awakeri Mysterios played Edgecumbe. Mysterios had a lethargic
beginning. Although defender Jeremy Hawkes cleared a shot off his goal-line, it was
no surprise to see Edgecumbe take the lead. However Mysterios sparked into life and
came back with an excellent Reender Buikema volley from a Sean Wright cross. In
the second half Wright extended the lead with a solo run and a calm finish. When
Hawkes scored with a strong shot, after being put through by Matt Ward, it looked
like Mysterios were cruising. However Edgecumbe came back at them and scored
some quick goals to take the lead. A Simon Turner volley evened the score before
both teams converted late penalties to complete a 5 - 5 draw. Sam Moore was named
player of the match for his efforts in goal and on the field.
In the 11th grade, Awakeri Aces finished their campaign with a resounding 11- 1 win
against Whakatane Rovers in the A division. Outstanding passing and individual play
by the Aces players meant that Rovers, who also played well, had little chance. Vikki
Lowndes turned in her usual excellent game to be named player of the match.
In the 11th grade B division Total Power Services Awakeri Rangers did well against
Whakatane Ramblers, recording a 2 - 0 win. Madison Constantine’s non-stop running
earned him player of the match. James Attewell was in good goal scoring form.
Awakeri Hurricanes played Whakatane Rangers in the 10th grade. James Holani put
in some good challenges and was named player of the match. Destrii Prout did a good
job as keeper, while Brent Gurran did some useful work up front. Rangers won the
game 2 - 0.
Draintech Awakeri Diggers had a good last outing in the 9th grade, against Hire A
Hubby James Street Wolves. Riki Roia and Gareth Rowlands combined well up front
for the Diggers, with Roia scoring two goals to snare a 2 - 1 win. Sam Schuler had a
strong game in the centre. The whole team were named players of the match after
playing so well as a unit.
Also in the 9th grade, Da Silva Awakeri Autos played the James Street Green
Machine. In another whole team effort, Autos were too strong, winning the game 8 -
0. Jayden Haddock and Stephen Glassbrook stood out in the forwards, with Matthew
Orr-McKeown and Kararaina Kingi having top games in defence.
Both Awakeri’s 8th grade teams produced excellent football. During the week, they
had had an exciting 2 - 2 draw with each other. On Saturday Awakeri Steelers beat
Whakatane Orcas 6 - 0. Emma Bennett was in top form, saving three shots at goal and
also doing well on the field. A move that started with Thomas Attewell passing to
Mark Morrison, who passed to his little brother Cameron to score was a highlight.
Private Asset Management Awakeri Tigers played well against Thornton in the 8th
grade, although they ended up losing 3 - 0. Ben Fretwell kept up his usual standard,
and earned player of the match. Alex Costello and Caleb Sheather did very well in
their turns as goalkeeper too.
Awakeri Rockets played James Street in a difficult 7th grade game. Matthew
Eveleens had a fantastic game in goal for Rockets. Player of the match Daniel Reeves
also played well, chasing hard and never giving up. Credit to all of the Rockets for a
great performance, and showing great sportsmanship.
Also in the 7th grade, Awakeri Kingz had a full on game with Ohope Knights. There
were plenty of solid challenges, and both teams agreed it was their best game of the
season. Good defensive skills had Shane Gow named player of the match for the
Kingz. The game ended in a 0 - 0 draw.
The Awakeri 6th grade end of season "grande finale" ended with a 2 - 1 win against
Dallisons Kawerau. It was a true team effort, enjoyed by players and spectators alike.
Sam McPherson was in fine form, scoring both of the goals, with his trade mark smile
never leaving his face. Jennifer Cram also showed great determination and was
announced player of the day. Jade Hollis (1st half) and Cameron Morrison (2nd half)
defended extremely well in goal. This will be a great 7th grade team next year.
The Awakeri players will now look forward to their end of season break up, on
Saturday 20th September.
