Awakeri Soccer Club... the Greatest Junior Soccer Club in New Zealand

June 30th 2001

Awakeri’s oldest soccer team, the 13th grade Gould Contracting Hotshots welcomed the holidays in the best
possible style. They claimed their sixth win in a row, against Whakatane Two this time. Ian Sisam opened
proceedings with a run down the right wing from half way, then into the box and a goal. Matthew Ward
received a long throw-in from Jeremy Hawkes and scored. Hawkes then provided a good pass for Ward to
take his goal tally this season to sixteen. Lance Robison scored with an excellent volley late in the first half,
before he also scored the remaining goal to give Hotshots a 5 - 0 win. Troy Jansen was named player of the
match for his excellent efforts in defence, while regular fullback Matthew Shaw enjoyed a run up front, and
had several good shots on goal.
In the 9th grade, Total Power Services Awakeri Rangers were pleased to get back on the paddock after two
weeks of rained off games. They met Kawerau in an even tussle, competing and holding their positions well.
The final score of 3 - 0 to Kawerau didn’t reflect the number of chances that Rangers created. Nicholas
Schuler
kept his position on the wing and made some good tackles to earn player of the match. Others to
shine were Ben Hancox, who covered the whole field as usual, and Jakob Parker, who had his best game of
the season.
If it wasn’t for some outstanding work from goalkeeper Jade Cossey, Private Asset Management Awakeri
Aces would have been in a much worse state than the final score of 0 - 4 against Opotiki in the 9th grade.
Cossey made some excellent saves, and also saved a penalty. He was named player of the match. Captain
Waylon Skipps led his team by example, working very hard, while Maia Poananga played her best game of
the season so far.
In the 7th grade, Drain Tech Awakeri Diggers got off to a good start against Kawerau, when Logan Munro
scored. However Kawerau managed to get two goals to take the game. Terri-Anne Hollis was player of the
match for her persistent defence. The Diggers team take inspiration from Hannah Hudson, who, although
she has moved away, still returns each week to play soccer with her old team-mates.
Awakeri Rockets met Otakiri in the 6th grade. They split their squad into a younger and an older team for
their 4 a-side games. The younger team managed a 3 - 3 draw, with goals to player of the day Robert Law
(2) and the hard working Samuel Burgess. The older team fought hard while losing 6 - 0, with Mark
Morrison and Jordan Steer leading the way.
Also in the 6th grade, Alfresco Court Motel Awakeri Tigers played the well organised Thornton team.
Tigers lived up to their name, while losing both their games closely. Ricky Hollis and Liam Richards
continue to develop their game week by week. Vinnie Luca had his best game so far, showing a lot of skill in
doing so.
Awakeri’s soccer teams are now having a two week break for the school holidays. A new draw for the two
11th grade teams will be coming out in the next week.
