The first win of the season for 10th grade Awakeri Hurricanes was the
highlight of Saturday’s soccer for the Awakeri club. Hurricanes’ David Ernest
also scored their first goal and it was enough to gain a win 1 - 0 against
Opotiki Spurs. Ernest was named player of the match. Another to shine was
Therase Jarrett. She competed well for the ball and set a good example for
her team-mates.
In the 15th grade Awakeri Mysterios came back from an early 2 - 0 deficit in
their game against United. A Matthew Ward lob deceived the United keeper.
However United extended their lead. In the second half Awakeri piled on the
pressure. Player of the match Ian Sisam intercepted the ball and set up Ward
for his second. Reender Buikema hit the crossbar. Matthew Shaw’s long
distance rocket bounced over the goal. Amongst the pressure, United got out
for the occasional raid, and won a number of free kicks. From one of these
keeper Simon Barr produced an excellent leaping save. United held on to win
the game 3 - 2.
In the Junior high School girls league, Awakeri had a tough game with their
Trident opposition. A number of their visitors were ex-Awakeri players. Ashlee
Cunningham had her usual great game in goal for Awakeri. Emma Searle’s
efforts had her named player of the match, while up front Sarah Macdonald
took on the opposition in style and Danniella Palmer shot the goal to earn a 1 -
1 draw.
Awakeri Adamson’s Pharmacy 13th Grade team dominated play right from the
kick off against Opotiki Tigers at home. Accurate passing, good
communication and solid defence saw a well- organised Awakeri side play the
game of their season so far. Ben McPherson, Russell Sisam and Bradley
Turner combined well up front, using pinpoint ball through from a well
organised mid field. McPherson was first to score after 5 minutes with a great
volley past the Opotiki goalie. Sisam and mid fielder David Wakelin also got
on the score card allowing Awakeri a 3-0 lead at half time.
The second half saw Opotiki come back strongly with some well executed
runs which were stopped by a strong defence who quickly got the ball forward.
McPherson started to carve up the Opotiki mid field and back line. The whole
team contributed to another 5 goals from this talented player. Matthew
Adamson also put a nice shot past the keeper.
Opotiki ran hard all game, never gave up and finally got two back, one from
excellent passing and positional play and another from a penalty.
Player of the day went to David Wakelin for his passing and 100%
commitment. Kelly Stanton and Leonard Sonntag also had a top games. The
final score was 9 - 2 to Awakeri.
Awakeri’s two 9th grade sides squared off against each other, and it was an
excellent closely fought game. Da Silva Awakeri Autos had their noses in front
at the end, winning 3 - 2, with Draintech Awakeri Diggers running out of time
to grab the equaliser. All players from both teams played to a high standard.
Guy Kamphorst was Autos player of the match for his excellent work in
defence. He was well supported by Kararaina Kingi and the two scorers
Jayden Haddock and Stephen Glassbrook (2). Riki Roia earned the player of
the match award for Diggers, scoring a goal and putting in a great
performance. Sam Schuler also scored and Terri-anne Hollis was another to
play up to her best.
In the 8th grade, Private Asset Management Awakeri Tigers lost to Ohope 3 -
1. This was despite player of the match Ricky Hollis having his best game yet
and scoring a goal. Leah Sheather also put in a good effort.
The Awakeri Steelers were happy with their 3 - 3 draw against James Street in
the 8th grade. Jessica Davis made her debut for the Steelers, and 6th grader
Cameron Morrison also helped out, to give Steelers the unusual luxury of
substitutes! Liam Richards, Mark Morrison and Tyler Mansell scored the goals.
Mansell’s effort was an unstoppable effort, right into the top corner. Khyron
Prout was named player of the match for his good all round game.
The Awakeri Kingz and Allandale had a very even tussle in the 7th grade.
The Kingz players played very well and got off to a good start with Dean Frost
scoring early. Late in the game Allandale equalised, but player of the match
Tautari Merito grabbed a last minute winner. Earlier goalkeeper James
Muncaster produced an excellent save to deny Allandale. Christopher Walker
was another to impress for the Kingz. The final score was Awakeri Kingz 2,
Allandale 1.
Awakeri 6th Grade had a close game against Te Teko and were narrowly
beaten 1-0. Nikki Turpie saved a few attempts in goal in the first half, with
Jade Hollis showing good skills on defence. Cameron Morrison was solid on
attack and was named Player of the Day.
