The last games of the season for a number of Awakeri's soccer teams saw some good team efforts.
In the 6th grade, Awakeri Tigers played Whakatane Tigers. A strong team performance by the Awakeri side brought a 3 - 0 win. James Thompson, Edgar Smits and Joshua Ruiter scored the goals and the team shared player of the match honours.
The Edge Swim School Awakeri Bullets drew nil all with the Whakatane Giants in the 7th grade on Saturday. Both teams played exceptionally well, with non stop action from start to finish. Shane Hope, Nikoli Christensen, Tyrin Penberth and Joshua Keightley kept up attacking pressure with numerous attempts at goal. Tom Holani, Dillon Murray, Tiaan Brownless and Jordan Van der Gulik provided great defence.
In the 8th grade, Awakeri Jets had a 1 - 0 win against Otakiri Tigers, Plenty of hard running by the Jets was rewarded with a great goal from Cameron Morrison. The goalies did a good job of defending their goal in their turns. The whole team was commended for their performance.
Agritech Trailers Awakeri Knights set the target of winning their last game of season in the 9th grade. They achieved this, thanks to Jesse Ingle goal. Knights played extremely well as a team. Their practices on positional play paid off well. Due to this, the entire team was awarded 'Player of the Day'. Samuel Burgess had an outstanding game, reading the game very well. David Klein Ovink was excellent on defence.
The Da Silva Autos Kingz played their last game for the season against Kawerau in the 9th grade. Both teams had plenty of shots at goal and had a goal apiece at half time. Player of the match was Matthew Eveleens. He sent good ball to the strikers and ran well with the ball too. It was a close match, with Kawerau taking a 3 - 2 win
In the 11th grade A division, Da Silva Awakeri Autos had an exciting game with Otakiri Ratbags. Autos created lots of chances, with three of them turning into goals, through Stephen Glassbrook, Guy Kamphorst and Jayden Haddock. Otakiri ended up winning 4 - 3, but the Autos came off the field happy, and sharing player of the match.
In the 13th grade, Total Power Awakeri Rangers started well, keeping Kawerau to one goal at the break. Rangers spent a lot of time on defence in the second half, but player of the match Gareth Rowlands scored a goal from a break-out. Rangers kept good team spirit going to the end, despite losing the game 1 - 5. Fenton Murray and the determined Hailey Greene also impressed.
A well organised and committed Ohope side proved too strong for Awakeri in the 15th grade. Both sides played intelligent football with numerous attacks on goal with Ohope sharper than in their first round meeting, Ohope got ahead with two goals before 13th grader Matthew Reeves provided excellent ball for Ben McPherson to run onto and score. Ohope went further ahead then McPherson scored again following good work from Reeves and Darren Groom.
In the second half, determined defence kept Ohope to one goal, making the final score 4 - 2 to Ohope
Goalie Jamie Emms was named player of the match for Awakeri with Matthew Reeves also making a valuable contribution.
