Some exciting soccer preluded the holiday break for Awakeri’s teams on Saturday.

Da Silva Awakeri Autos had a tough 10th grade game with Whakatane Rovers. Autos
held the lead at half time 2 - 1, but Rovers came back at them and an exciting second
half got the score to 5 - 3 to Autos. Alex Christensen’s good positional play and
passing earned him player of the match. Guy Kamphorst got his goal scoring form
back with two goals, Stephen Glassbrook (2) and Matthew Orr-McKeown also put
away goals.
Also in the 10th grade, Drain Tech Awakeri Diggers staged a second half comeback
against James Street Rebels. Diggers were down 0 - 3 half way through the game,
although Diggers did have a number of unsuccessful shots. Player of the match Gareth
Rowlands scored twice after the break in an exciting ending. Rebels hung on to win 3
- 2. Shaun Musgrave played his heart out in the midfield for Diggers, and Zoe
Johnston put in a good effort in defence.
Belief in themselves was the key to Awakeri Dragons 9th grade effort against Otakiri
Warriors. Dragons started slowly, going behind by two goals. However they dragged
themselves back into it, with plenty of encouragement from the sideline, and
eventually won the game 4 - 3. Ben Fretwell’s improved passing saw him named
player of the match. He also scored two goals, as did Mark Morrison.
In the 8th grade, Awakeri Kingz all played well against Allandale One. It was a close
game, with Dean Frosts two runaway goals earning a 2 - 2 draw for Kingz. Kurt
Turpie’s good running up front had him named player of the match.
Awakeri Jets showed good teamwork in their 7th grade game with Kawerau Two.
Cameron Morrison scored for Jets in what turned out to be a 3 - 1 win to Kawerau.
Oliver Richmond was player of the match for his consistent effort throughout the
game.
In the 6th grade, Awakeri Tigers had their second win of the season. A Joshua
Keightley goal gave them a 1 - 0 win against Kawerau Three. Dillon Murray got
player of the match for his efforts, and Rebekah Bloxholm made some good saves in
goal.
The Edge Swim School Awakeri 6th grade had a great evenly matched game against
Otakiri Dragons. Everyone put on a top performance, resulting in a one-all draw.
Nikoli Christensen scored Awakeri’s goal using superb footwork. Other team
members had some near misses. Tiaan Brownless flew around the field, always close
to the ball and was awarded the player of the match.
In the 13th grade, Total Power Services Awakeri Rangers had a home game against
James St Hotshots. With three players already away on holiday, Rangers were up
against it. They held their own in the first half. Two good set ups from player of the
match Hayden Reeves brought goals to Evan Hunt and brother Matthew Reeves.
However Hotshots eventually took control and won the game 6 - 2.
Private Asset Management Awakeri Aces travelled to Opotiki with only nine players.
By half time they were down 4 - 0. At half time the ref suggested to the Opotiki coach
that the teams be evened up with the help of a player from the other Opotiki 13th
grade team. The Aces tried hard all game, never gave up, an excellent effort. They
scored 3 goals ( Finn Kamphorst, Vincent Sheather and the Opotiki player ) whilst the
Opotiki side were unable to add to their score, resulting in a 4 - 3 win to Opotiki.
Aces’ player of the match was Vikki Lowndes, who played like a demon, all game.
In the 11th grade, Awakeri Steelers were up against top team Whakatane Celtic.
Steelers acquitted themselves well, with player of the match Matthew Richmond
making some great saves in the goal. Celtic won the match 6 - 0.
