A good natured fixture between the club's two 13th grade teams was the highlight of the latest round of soccer for Awakeri.
Although the older Private Asset Management Awakeri Aces spent a lot of time on attack, Total Power Awakeri Rangers put up enough spirited resistance to make a game of it. The sideline crowd got behind the more inexperienced Rangers team and saw them hold out for some quite long intervals. Rangers' defenders Gareth Rowlands and Paul Haslam stood out, and Matthew Richmond was sound in goal. Aces players Ben Hancox, Chris Johnston and Kimberley Byres worked hard. Aces eventually gained a comfortable victory.
In the 11th grade A division, Da Silva Awakeri Autos put it all together against the luckless Whakatane Wasps, to win well. Sydney Jones turned on his best form and was named player of the match. Jayden Haddock, Alex Christensen, Stephen Glassbrook, Guy Kamphorst, Liam Richards and Josh McIntyre all got into the scoring action.
Awakeri's two 11th grade B division teams will square off on Thursday afternoon, in what should be a closely matched encounter.
The 9th grade Da Silva Awakeri Kingz played Ohope Predators at Ohope. The Kingz were short of a player in the first half. Ohope made the most of it and had a good lead by half time. In the second half, the Kingz put together some excellent passing and had a lot of close shots at Ohope's goal. However the goalie stopped them all, which gave Predators a 5 - 0 win.
Also in the 9th grade, the Agritech Trailers Awakeri Knights played very well against the Thornton Crushers. Goals from Christopher Walker, Kurt Turpie and player of the match Jordan Sutton secured a 3 - 0 win for the Knights.
The Edge Swim School Awakeri Bullets played their hardest game yet, against Ohope. Dillon Murray and Joshua Keightley attacked persistently, backed up by a hard working team. Tyrin Penberth and Tiaan Brownless defended well in goal but Ohope managed to get three goals through, winning 3 - 0 at the end of the game. Dillon Murray played his best game this season and was a well deserved player of the match.
Awakeri Tigers named Edgar Smits their player of the match for their 6th grade game with Ohope Volcanoes.
