Awakeri Soccer Club... the Greatest Junior Soccer Club in New Zealand

May 4th 2002

High goal tallies were a feature of Saturday’s games for the Awakeri Soccer Club’s older age groups.
In the 15th grade, Awakeri Hobbits had a tough match against James Street. Although James Street had a
three goal lead by half time, Awakeri had also created three good opportunities and certainly deserved some
reward. The strong James Street line-up continued the pressure in the second half and went on to win 6 - 0.
The Awakeri team defended determinedly, with Matthew Shaw earning player of the match for his tackling.
There were also strong performances from Nicholas Haslam, Matthew Barr and Croydon Little, while
keeper Cody Hancox’s massive punts down field gave his forwards something to run on to.
Awakeri’s Intermediate Girls team were delighted with their efforts against Whakatane. Emma Searle scored
twice and player of the match Danniella Palmer once to secure a 3 - 2 win. Palmer and Philippa Haslam went
close with other efforts. Christine Scott impressed with her tenacity, and Sarah Macdonald continued her
good form too.
Awakeri Adamson Pharmacy 13th grade played a very strong and disciplined Ohope side with Ohope
coming away with a deserved 7-0 win. The first half saw Ohope creating numerous skilful runs and
capitalised on loose defence to go to the break 4-0 up. The second half saw more commitment from
Awakeri with a better-organised defence and also some excellent breaks by David Wakelin and Jonathan
Whitaker in the forwards. The Ohope backs and goalkeeper kept all attempts out. Backs Jordan McDonald
and Mark Ernest for Awakeri certainly stopped the score line from being higher than 7-0 with total
commitment. Others to have a good game were Kelly Stanton, Casey McKay and Neil Sax. Player of the day
went to a much deserving Jordan Macdonald.
The Da Silva Awakeri Autos played Paroa at Whakatane in the 11th grade. The Autos were short of three players, but with
excellent passing and ball control won 5 - 1. Player of the day went to Leonard Sonntag for lots of hard
running and four great goals. Hayden Reeves scored the other goal first half and saved several goals as
goalie in the second half.
The 10th Grade Private Asset Management Aces were quickly into stride in their home game with Ohope.
Right from the whistle, Aces looked to attack down the wings. They were rewarded quickly with a goal in
the opening five minutes. They pressurised the Ohope defence with some excellent passing and great running
into space. They kept this pressure up for the whole game and came out deserving winners 6 goals to 1.The
player of the day for Aces was Jo Burke, for his excellent positional play and good tackling. Paul Haslam
also had an very good game. The goal scorers were Devon Swart (2), Waylon Skipps (2) and Vincent
Sheather (2). Overall, it was a great team performance to start the season.
Total Power Services Awakeri Rangers met a very strong Opotiki team in the 10th grade. Rangers played
very well in the first half, creating a number of chances and the half time score was 2 - 1 to Opotiki.
However, the large field and all the running players had done in the first half, took its toll and Opotiki scored
a lot of goals with the final score being 9 - 1 to Opotiki. Players to shine, were player of the day, Matthew
Reeves
and Joshua McCormick with good running and interpassing up front. In midfield, Emma Barr had
another strong game and at the back, Kane Wakefield, kept his position on the left very well.
Drain Tech Awakeri Diggers turned on an awesome display in their 8th grade game against Opotiki Raiders.
They moved forward as a team, passing the ball around nicely. Riki Roia put away four goals, while Gareth
Rowlands and Logan Munro also scored. New player Mark Burnett was named player of the day for his
excellent contribution. Diggers won the game 6 - 0.
It was a very even 8th grade game played between the Awakeri Devils and the Ohope Panthers in the first
half. Keanu Carter scoring early in the second half, giving Devils their first goal for the season. Ohope was
not to be denied their chance and quickly scored two goals in a row. It would possibly have been more if
Alex Christensen, the Devils keeper, had not been in good form. He saved a lot of shots from the Panthers -
Alex was named player of the day. A second late goal by Jayden Haddock saw the game end with a 2 all
draw.
Alfresco Court Motels Awakeri Tigers had an unusual 7th grade game with Whakatane Two. Both player of
the day Robert Law and Leah Sheather had turns at playing for the opposition to make up their numbers.
Both of them scored while doing so to give Whakatane a 2 - 0 win! Robert Law happily played in goal for
Tigers. Vinny Luca, Stephanie Brooks, the improving Clive McIndoe and the enthusiastic Caleb Sheather all
performed well.
Also in the 7th grade, all the Awakeri Steelers played well against Otakiri. Thomas Attewell was named
player of the match for his all round efforts. Tyler Mansell scored the only goal of the game, earning Steelers
a 1 - 0 win. Steelers had no reserves, so all five players did well to play the entire match.
Awakeri Kingz had a good 6th grade game against Ohope. They were all happy to have had their first
game. Jesse Ingle earned the player of the match award for some very good work in goal. Dean Frost scored
the goal for Kingz, in what was a 3 - 1 win to Ohope.
6th grade Awakeri Rockets had a great morning. They lost 4 - 2 against Dallisons Kawerau. Kurt Turpie and
Luke Matchitt were the goal scorers. Player of the match Kurt Turpie got an excellent goal from the kick
-off. He did a big kick and it went right through all the opposition and into the goal. Cameron Morrison and
Kelsei Ingle also had a very good games, getting right into the middle of the play, and clearing the ball well.
