Awakeri’s three soccer teams still playing all thoroughly enjoyed their games on
Saturday.
In the 10th grade, league champions Da Silva Awakeri Autos had a great battle with
runners-up James Street Rebels. Autos grabbed a half time lead, but Rebels came
back in the second half to earn a 2 - 2 draw. Autos all played very well, with Keanu
Carter and Alex Christensen putting away the goals. Both sides were happy that the
score was a fair reflection of the game.
Drain Tech Awakeri Diggers took on the solid Saints combination in the 10th grade.
Despite excellent games from Zoe Johnston and Taylah Bateson, and two goals from
Sam Schuler, Saints won the game 5 - 2.
A big crowd enjoyed the 11th grade game between Awakeri Steelers and James Street
Dragons. All players contributed well and the game ended up in a 0 - 0 draw. For
Steelers, Kate Eggleton made a good contribution and was named player of the
match.
Next weekend Awakeri has entered a team in the 10th grade John Horsburgh
tournament in Whakatane, and the 11th grade have their final fixture.
The Awakeri club has its breakup on Saturday the 18th of September.
