July 5th 2003

Saturday was a very successful day for Awakeri’s soccer teams, with ten out of twelve
registering wins.
A horror first few minutes against Whakatane stung the Awakeri Mysterios into
action in their 15th grade fixture. Whakatane waltzed through the Awakeri defence to
score two quick goals. Awakeri then got their game going, and pinned Whakatane
back in their own half for increasingly long periods. Simon Turner provided the ball
firstly for Reender Buikema to score, then for Matthew Ward to even the game up. A
Sean Wright assist set Buikema up to put Awakeri into the lead, then Turner himself
got onto the scoresheet. Wright pounced on the rebound from an Ian Sisam shot to
score, then Steven Smit won the ball and provided a good pass for Wright to calmly
slot his second past the Whakatane keeper. The final score was Whakatane 3,
Awakeri 6. Smit and Turner turned in outstanding performances to share the player of
the match award. They were well supported by Jordan Macdonald and the ever
reliable Matthew Shaw.
In the Junior High School girls’ league, Awakeri were thrilled with their 3 - 0 win
against Trident High School. The match was fast and furious and could have gone
either way, however Awakeri took their chances well. Player of the match Danniella
Palmer scored with a header and then put away a second after good build-up play
from Sarah Macdonald. In an unusual sequence of events, the Trident goalkeeper
picked up a backpass to concede an indirect free kick. The Trident team lined up
along the goal line to try and protect the goal, but hands were used to keep the free
kick out. From this a direct penalty was awarded, and Kelly Stanton scored. All in all
it was an exellent team performance.
It was another top effort from Adamson’s Amcal Pharmacy Awakeri 13th grade,
playing away against a well organised Saints side. The chill factor saw both sides start
slowly. Five minutes in, Awakeri centre forward Ben McPherson was first to open the
scoring, smashing one past the Saints keeper from 20 metres out. Constant attacks on
the Saints goal and a lovely cross from Kelly Stanton saw James Wilson slip one past
the goalie. Saints stepped up the pace and got one past the Awakeri keeper, when
their forwards finally broke the Awakeri defence after continued pressure.
The second half saw the Saints come out firing and putting some nicely executed
plays together. Awakeri were up to the task and David Wakelin finished off after
receiving quick ball forward from the midfield. Saints came back. Some excellent
positional play got the ball quickly to their forwards but the backs and keeper Russell
Sisam blocked all attempts.
Awakeri’s player of the match James Wilson scored his second goal ten minutes from
full time after giving a 100% effort all game. Mid field players Cody Fowell and Sam
Hall also had top games. The final score was 4 - 1 to Awakeri.
A hat-trick to Vincent Sheather, and 2 goals from Chris Stanton, paved the way in a
good win for Total Power Awakeri Rangers in their 11th grade game with Otakiri.
Rangers passed the ball well, especially between the midfield and forwards. Their
defence was solid, with Paul Haslam and Vikki Lowndes both having good games.
Mathew Richmond was player of the day, for his good passing and excellent team
spirit.
Awakeri Hurricanes notched up their second win of the season with a 1 - 0 score
against Whakatane. Harry Cotter was named player of the match, for passing well and
following the game plan. James Holani was the scorer and Matthew Fulton also
impressed with a hard working performance.
In the 9th grade, Draintech Awakeri Diggers beat Ohope 4 - 0. Shaun Musgrave
earned player of the match through an excellent all round game. Gareth Rowlands
continued his scoring form with a hat-trick with Taylah Bateson scoring the other
goal. Rhys Cram kindly played half a game for the opposition and made some
tremendous breaks for them.
Da Silva Awakeri Autos had their first loss of the season, when they played James
Street in a good hard 9th grade game. Jayden Haddock scored for Autos, and Sydney
Jones was player of the match. James Street played well to take the game 3 - 1.
In the 8th grade, Private Asset Management 8th Grade Tigers had a very good 6 - 0
win in their game against Edgecumbe. With the addition of two new players,
Christine Tipper and Ben Fretwell, Tigers are playing with a lot more resolve. Team
work and attack came together well in this game. The goal scorers were Ben Fretwell
(2), Leah Sheather (2), Rikki Hollis, and Caleb Sheather. Player of the day went to
Fretwell, who has proven to be a real bonus to the team.
Awakeri Steelers turned on a terrific performance in their 8th grade game against
Kawerau. Steelers started the game short of players and were quickly two goals
behind. However the arrival of Mark Morrison and the contributions of two five year
old younger brothers turned the game around. Morrison scored all five goals to grab a
5 - 3 win for Steelers. Everyone worked extra hard when on defence to keep the
Kawerau team out, with player of the match Khyron Prout making multiple saves in
goal. Thomas Attewell also impressed with his running. The team is grateful to young
Cameron Morrison and Tame Tarau for playing.
All the 7th grade Awakeri Kingz players did well in their game against Thornton.
Player of the match Dean Frost worked very hard and was rewarded with a goal.
Tautari Merito (2) and Bryce Burnett also scored. Kingz won the game 4 - 0.
Awakeri Rockets also had a good day in the 7th grade, beating Te Teko 3 - 1.
Awakeri 6th Grade played valiantly againt Otakiri Steamers to narrowly lose 1 - 0.
Nikki Turpie again showed prowess in goal in the first half, beating off some good
attempts at goal. Sam Holani and Jennifer Cram proved strong in defence, with
Cameron Morrison being awarded player of the match for great attacking up the side
to nearly score twice. It was a good team effort overall.
