The first half of the match between Awakeri NewCom and Ohope 15th grade teams
was very even with both sides showing good pace and skills. Numerous attacks on
goal were well constructed and the defences held strong. However the finishing was
not there and dedicated keeping saw the game scoreless at the break.
The second half began with this strong Ohope side showing why they are at the top of
the league table. Ohope put accurate ball forward and caught Awakeri napping with 3
well-worked goals in the space of 10 minutes. Awakeri fought back. Forwards
Hayden Te Moana and player of the day Paddy Deegan latched on to good ball from
their mid field and backs but could not score. Ohope scored again and after a
scramble in the Awakeri box an own goal was conceded. Both sides played a good
clean game with very few penalties awarded.
The final score was 5 - 0 to Ohope.
In the 13th grade, Total Power Awakeri Rangers played Whakatane Ajax at Awakeri.
It was a game of two halves. The first half was all Rangers with most of the game
played in the Ajax’s half. The score had blown out to 5 - 0 at half time. In the second
half Whakatane put more pressure on Rangers defence and scored twice. The final
score was Rangers 7 Ajax 1. James Wilson, Hayden and Matthew Reeves all scored
twice each with Evan Hunt scoring the remaining goal. Rangers’ player of the match
went to Conrad Gurran for clever defensive play.
Also in the 13th grade, Private Asset Management Awakeri Aces had a well deserved
3 -1 win. Playing Whakatane Athletic, the Awakeri team started slowly, but as the
game went on Aces showed more determination to win. Scorers for Awakeri were
Hawea Mansell, Chris Stanton and Vincent Sheather. Player of the match went to
Stacey Law for her efforts in defence. Her great long throw-ins were a bonus, which
led to several good attacks on goal. This was a gutsy effort by Awakeri who were
rewarded for their all round team effort.
Awakeri Steelers came up against a strong Ohope One team in the 11th grade. They
stuck to their guns and made the opposition work hard. Kane Wakefield’s good work
in goal and out on the field had him named player of the match. Ohope won the game
6 - 0.
Drain Tech Awakeri Diggers had only the bare numbers for their 10th grade game
against Whakatane Sharks on Saturday. The Diggers all worked hard and came away
with a 2 - 2 draw. Gareth Rowlands was lively up front and scored the goals. Leah
Sheather earned player of the match with some great work in goal.
Da Silva Awakeri Autos continued on their merry way in the 10th grade. Their
opposition Saints did get the first word in with the opening goal, but the Autos strike
force is strong. Stephen Glassbrook, Keanu Carter and Jayden Haddock all scored in a
10 - 2 result. Sydney Jones was named player of the match. After a good first half in
goal, he was dynamic in the midfield and showed a positive attitude with his
encouragement of his team-mates.
In the 9th grade, Awakeri Dragons had a close game with Ohope Two. The Dragons
gave it heaps and had to contend with some physical play. Tyler Mansell’s non-stop
effort had him named player of the match. Ricky Hollis and Ben Fretwell scored the
Dragons’ goals.
A slick Ohope team was too strong for the Awakeri Kingz in the 8th grade, winning 6
- 0. Jesse Ingle was player of the match for Kingz.
The Awakeri Jets enjoyed having full game time in their 7th grade game at Opotiki
Gold. The two teams were evenly matched and had a good game in the soggy
conditions. Taylah Wakefield tried hard throughout for Jets and earned the player of
the match award.
The two Awakeri 6th grade teams played each other on Saturday. While Awakeri
Tigers are improving with each game, they couldn’t break through and Edge Swim
School Awakeri Bullets won the game 2 - 0. For Tigers, Alec Hunt earned player of
the match, showing good improvement in his play. Dillon Murray had some good runs
up the field, and Joshua Keightley also played hard.
Tiaan Brownless was player of the match for Bullets, he had his best game of the
season. Daniel Perkinson also had a very good game, and Nikoli Christensen was the
goal scorer.
