Discipline, skilful teamwork and dedicated goal keeping were the keys to a
highly entertaining match between the Opotiki Black and Newcom Awakeri
15th Grade sides. Were it not for excellent keeping from both keepers and top
defence from the back lines, the final score of 1-1 would have been greater.
The game was played at a very fast pace from the kick off. Each side created
skilful passing plays, which saw the game move from one end of the field to the
other. Another incentive for the win from this game was the double points on
the line to make up for a missed game mid season.Opotiki finally cracked the
tight Awakeri defence near the end of the first half with a nicely weighted shot
on goal.
The second half saw more of the same fast accurate attacking and tight defence.
An in off defender goal from Paddy Degan after a top run down the right by
Jarred Scoles levelled the scores mid way through. Both sides gave 100% right
on the soggy pitch to the final whistle, with each having plenty of chances to
snatch the win.
Kerry Robins- Tukiri played strongly up front in the first half then had a blinder
in goal the second. Player of the match went to Daniel Jones for creating plenty
of opportunities for the forwards.
In the 13th grade Total Power Awakeri Rangers won their game by default as
their Whakatane Athletic opposition turned up short on numbers. The two
teams had an enjoyable time though, swapping players around and having a
friendly game. The highlight was one of the Whakatane players climbing the
boundary fence to retrieve the ball, and falling off spectacularly into some still
remaining flood waters!
The Private Asset Management Awakeri Aces had a good 4 - 3 win away to
Otakiri Wild Cats in the 13th grade. Scorers for Aces were Vincent Sheather
(2), Mathew Bateson and Evan Hunt. This evenly played match saw the lead
change frequently. The difference proved to be the Aces forwards, who took
their opportunities. Player of the match was Chris Stanton, for his excellent
work rate, and solid tackling.
Awakeri Steelers won their 11th grade game against Kawerau by default.
Draintech Awakeri Diggers were short on numbers, but all played well in their
10th grade game against a strong Edgecumbe team. Logan Munro’s hard work
in defence saw him named player of the match. Rhys Cram had a good all
round game, while Gareth Rowlands tried hard to get Diggers on the
scoreboard. Edgecumbe won the game 5 - 0.
In the 9th grade, Awakeri Dragons had a good first half against Ohope, going
ahead twice through Mark Morrison. However, in an entertaining game, Ohope
came back, helped by two unfortuante own goals, and won 3 - 2. The game was
played in good spirit. Clive McIndoe’s defence earned him player of the match.
Awakeri Kingz also had a good first half, in their 8th grade game against
Edgecumbe. Daniel Reeves scored the goal to secure a 1 - 1 draw. Samuel
Burgess was anmed player of the match for the Kingz.
Awakeri 7th grade were pleased to get back on the field this week and had an
awesome game against James Street Grasshoppers, winning 2 - 1. Goal scorers
were Zac Fretwell and Konar Jarrett, who also gained the player of the match
trophy. The whole team played well as a unit, with special mention to Kale
Young for his great attacking skills and hard-out effort through the whole game.
Awakeri Tigers were all focused on the job in their 6th grade game at
Whakatane Grasshoppers. Shane Hope’s efforts had him named player of the
match. Rebekah Bloxholm did well in her half in goal and Daniel Gow showed
good determination. The game ended in a 0 - 0 draw.
Edge Swim School Awakeri Bullets went three goals behind in their 6th grade
game against Ohope. However, they got back into the game, with Nikoli
Christensen scoring twice. Daniel Perkinson played very well and was named
player of the match.
