Awakeri Soccer Club... the Greatest Junior Soccer Club in New Zealand
June 9th 2001
Awakeris soccer teams continue to improve and perform well
in EBOP leagues this season.
In the 6th grade, Alfresco Court Awakeri Tigers met Whakatane One for their
two games. Caleb Sheather
deservedly earned player of the day for his effort of scoring all seven of his
teams goals. Nathan Hudson
and Ricky Hollis were others to shine. Mikaela Hancox and Jaime Clark made some
good tackles. In the
other game Te Naawe Tupe and Alex Christensen were positioning themselves and
passing well. Vinnie
Luca and Leah Sheather scored some good goals between them. There is a very
good team spirit developing
within the squad.
Awakeri Rockets met Whakatane Two in the 6th grade. Rockets all performed well,
with Mark Morrison
named player of the day after a strong game. Jordan Steer was in good form and
scored a goal, with Taylor
Aramoana also putting in a classy goal. Robert Law was another to shine as Rockets
lost 4 - 2.
Good passing and ball control were the keys for Awakeri Blue Stingers in their
7th grade games against
Edgecumbe. Zara Fowell was excited to score her first goal, while Jemma Shaw
earned player of the day for
her efforts. Stingers won their games 3 - 2 and 2 - 1.
Drain Tech Awakeri Diggers all showed continuing improvement in their concentration
and skills when they
Otakiri in the 7th grade. Sam Schulers hard running saw him named player
of the match. Riki Roia (4 ) and
Gareth Rowlands, who played half a game for the opposition, scored the goals
in the 5 - 0 win. Terri-Anne
Hollis was another to shine.
In the 8th grade, Awakeri Chiefs turned in an excellent team effort against
Kawerau. Player of the match
Robert Sonntag, and Matthew Richmond scored the goals to earn a 2 - 0 win. Harry
Cotter put in a very
good all-round effort, while brother Lindsey had a top half game as keeper.
There was no quarter given in the 9th grade game between Private Asset Management
Awakeri Aces and
Paroa. In a hard fought, entertaining game played in good sportsmanship, Awakeri
came out victors 2 -1.
Finn Kamphorst scored first, and Devon Swart added the second. Player of the
day was Chelsie Pettinger,
who made some excellent tackles and was very determined. Others to stand out
were Vincent Bayliss who
made some good clearances and Waylen Skipps who covered a lot of ground. Overall
it was a very good
team effort, with players starting to work some good combinations.
Total Power Awakeri Rangers had another game against a challenging opposition
- Opotiki Sharks. The first
half saw Opotiki Sharks score five goals though, Ben Hancox in goal, managed
to save almost as many. The
second half saw Awakeri Rangers more focused on positional play and using their
wings, resulting in more
attacking play. Neither team scored any goals in the second half and play appeared
far more even. Ben
Hancox gained 'player of the day' for his efforts in goal during the second
half and footwork with the ball
during the second half. Joshua Graham had another great game as did Chris Stanton
and Emma Barr. Vikki
Lowndes, in the back of the field, showed excellent communication skills in
controlling the forward and
backward movement of other team mates.
In a catch-up game played earlier in the week, Adamsons Amcal Pharmacy
Awakeri Athletic ended up
drawing 3 - 3 with Ohope in the 11th grade A Division. Player of the match Richmond
Brown made some
excellent runs and crosses and scored a fabulous goal from the left. Ben McPherson
scored a goal from a fair
distance and Kelly Stanton smacked in a rolling ball. Ohope clawed their way
back to get the draw in the
final minutes. Max Butlers running and tackling was a strength in midfield,
while Simon Barr played a very
disciplined game in defence.
David da Silva Awakeri Autos had sound defence as a basis for their 3 - 1 win
against Whakatane in the
11th grade B Division. Player of the match James Wilson, along with Russell
Sisam and Bradley Turner
scored the goals. The team as a whole defended and then attacked well. Anthony
Sykes was a stand out in
defence. He was well supported by Glenn Collins.
Player of the match Croydon Little scored twice and set up a third goal before
leaving the field injured
before half time when Gould Contracting Awakeri Hotshots played Whakatane One
in the 13th grade.
Matthew Ward (3), Ian Sisam (2), Nicholas Law and Jeremy Hawkes also put away
goals as Hotshots
cruised to a 9 - 0 win. Good build up play was a feature of many of these goals,
and the best of them ended
with a low diving Sisam header. Whakatane never gave up and attacked whenever
they could, producing one
especially brave save from part-time keeper Wayne Groom. Regular keeper Cody
Hancox enjoyed a good
run in the field and showed some good skills.
