Awakeri's football teams had some exciting games as their league programme got off to a start on Saturday.
In the 13th grade Awakeri Ninjas hosted a Trident High's girls XI. It was a good hit out for both teams, with Awakeri lodging a 6 – 0 win.
In the 11th grade, the Cascade Charters Awakeri Raptors had a good hard fought win against Ohope Makos. Raptors led 3 – 0 at half time. Ohope pulled a goal back in the second half in a close contest. A great team effort by the Raptors earned the 3 – 1 win. Their player of the day was Rhiane Byers.
Awakeri Magic played Saint Stars in a spirited 11th grade game. The Magic team was on the back foot from the start with only eight players turning out to play against the full team of nine from Stars. The Saints overcame the Magic's determined efforts to hold their own, with an eventual 3 – 0 win. Magic dominating in the final quarter but unfortunately couldn't get a goal. Player of the day for Magic went to Alex Whiteman for his covering of two positions for the match.
Awakeri Mustangs had a tough first game against Allandale in the 9th grade, winning 2 - 1. The whole team played well with lots of good teamwork. Awakeri's goals were scored by Jade Mahy and Jacson Heal. The player of day was Hayden Grant for his excellent defence in his first ever game of soccer.
In the 8th grade, Awakeri Phoenix played St. Josephs. St Joseph's won 6 – 4 in an exciting encounter. Paige Horner did very well to be named player of the day. Awakeri's goal scorers were Joe Ferguson (3) and Kalani Henman.
7th grade Awakeri Rascals had a fab morning at soccer. They won their first game with great goals by Max Mead and Harry Davidson and drew the second game- another goal from Max. The player of the day went to a very deserving McKenzie Nurkka for her teamwork helping to set up the goals.
Awakeri United had two good games in the 7th grade. They beat Whk Town Avengers 2 - 0 (Tanner Willetts scored both goals) and they won 2 – 1 against Plains Strikers, (JJ Keepa & Kolton Kerrigan each scored a goal).
The Awakeri Rovers played a great first game against the Saints Rovers in the 6th grade, winning 2 - 0 with Corbin James scoring the first goal of the day. Their second game against the Awakeri Eagles proved tough, with many near misses. It was a 0 – 0 draw. Ben Overdevest was player of the day.
The Awakeri Eagles did really well this week in the 6th grade. They went down 2 - 1 to the Ohope Snappers with Jasper Wilson scoring the goal. Their second game was a draw with Awakeri Rovers. The player of the day for Eagles was Arlo Williams for his great defence.
Also in the 6th grade, Awakeri Aces played Ohope Kingfish. Awakeri's goals were scored by Jude Sweeney (3), Bryn Willetts and Kyan Krause, in a 5 – 1 result. Temaioha Hillman was named player of the day for some great ball skills and positional play.
