Awakeri's football teams were involved in some great contests on Saturday.
The Awakeri Ninjas had a hard fought 2 - 2 draw away against Opotiki in the 13th grade. Brad Yuill opened the scoring with a good run and shot. Opotiki equalised, then from the kick off Ben Peat put a close range goal in for Ninjas to go into the halftime break up 2 - 1. Both teams had very strong defensive lines and the score remained until Opotiki grabbed a well-deserved equaliser in the last few minutes. Max Thompson was player of the day for his defensive efforts. Addison Dodson also had a very strong game.
A great defensive effort by Cascade Charters Awakeri Raptors in the 11th grade helped create a 5 - 0 win against the Ohope Orcas. Raptors' player of the day was Rhianna Rowe, who had an outstanding game in defence.
Also in the 11th grade, Awakeri Magic played the Whakatane Town Sharks. Magic scored first through Arran Dominick, but Sharks took control in the second half to win 6 – 1. Magic worked very hard with their bare numbers and held the score at 1 – 1 at half time, but Sharks were able to keep their players fresh with substitutions. Ryan Ashton was player of day.
Awakeri Mustangs played Edgecumbe in the 9th grade, winning 4 – 2. Goals were scored by Jacson Heal (2), Jade Mahy and Fergus Rowe. The player of day was Jade Mahy.
Also in the 9th grade, Awakeri Athletic had a good game against Kawerau. There was great teamwork going on and good defence around the goal. Athletic lost 3 - 0, however the teams were relatively evenly matched, with Kawerau having a slight edge. The player of the day was Mason Merriman. He did a fine job as goalie and saved many potential goals for the opposition.
Awakeri Phoenix had an amazing 12 goal thriller with Ohope in the 8th grade. Phoenix took out the game 7 – 5. Kalani Henman was their player of the day.
Awakeri Rascals had a great morning of soccer in the 7th grade. First up was a good game between two Awakeri teams. Rascals lost 1 - 0 but they played very well, especially with no subs. Their second game was a 2 - 1 win against Whakatane team. The goals were scored by Harry Davidson and Braxton Semmens. The player of the day went to Olivia Hathaway who had two excellent games.
Awakeri Rangers 7th grade lost both their games on Saturday, but they played very well. All the players had heaps of energy and enthusiasm. They played hard and didn't give up, but the other teams (Whakatane Town Snappers and Allandale) were too strong for them. The player of the day was Oliver Shallard.
Also in the 7th grade, Awakeri United won their two games. They beat Awakeri Rascals 1 – 0, with Tanner Willetts the scorer, and Whakatane Avengers. Tanner was the scorer there too, with Kolton Kerrigan the player of the day.
Awakeri Aces did well in their two 6th grade games. They drew 2 – 2 with Awakeri Rovers. Kyan Krause and Jude Sweeney scored the goals. Aces lost 1 – 4 to Ohope Stingrays. Temaioha Hillman's pile driver of a goal from outside the box was a highlight. Jude Sweeney's excellent defence earned him player of the day.
Awakeri Rovers had another great day of football in the 6th grade. First up they played the Awakeri Aces. This was an evenly matched competition with both teams displaying good teamwork and ball skills. The end result was 2 - 2. Rovers' scorers were Corbin James and Tobi Tootell, who also shone in defence. Rovers then played the Awakeri Eagles, a 3 – 1 win. Scarlett Mead, Logan Owen and player of the day Corbin James scored the goals.
Also in the 6th grade, Awakeri Eagles had a bye first up. Their second game was against Awakeri Rovers. Eagles played well, the result a 2 - 1 loss with their goal being scored by new player Mylee Mathews, who also got player of the day.
