Awakeri's youngest footballers are having loads of fun and doing well every week. Saturday was another typically good day. The 6th and 7th grades play at Warren Park every week. Those players are under six and under seven years old. They play two games each playing day.
Awakeri Eagles did really well this week in the 6th grade. Arlo Williams got player of the day for his great team work. Their first game was against Allandale All Stars, Mylee Mathews scored the goals for a 2 - 0 win. The second game was against the Ohope Kingfish, Mylee scored two more goals and Harvey Ferguson scored one for a 3 -0 win.
Awakeri Rovers always have a fun time in the 6th grade. They played the Saints Shooters first, a 2-0 win. Corbin James scored the first goal only seconds after the starting hooter. Tobias Hoffman scored the next goal, earning a big cheer from the sideline supporters. Ben Overdevest and Maddie Paling made some great plays in the defence roles and Scarlett Mead has a killer kick on her. In the second game they played the Awakeri Aces, who won 1 – 0. The teams were evenly matched. Once again Tobi Tootell proved to be a valuable goal keeper whilst Corbin and Ben did their best to tackle and redirect the ball.
Also in the 6th grade, Awakeri Aces beat Allandale Arrows 6 -0, with goals from Jude Sweeney (5) and Kyan Krause. Another Jude Sweeney goal got the Aces a 1 – 0 win against Awakeri Rovers. Player of the day was Bryn Willetts for some awesome attacking and support play; reminiscent of an Arsenal-era Dennis Bergkamp!
Awakeri Rascals had another great morning of soccer in the 7th grade. They played two games against two Allandale teams, winning the first game 2 - 0 and the second one 1 - 0. They were both really good games. All goals were scored by player of the day Max Mead. The Rascals team is playing well together and supporting each other well.
Awakeri Phoenix played Kawerau Red Devils in the 8th grade. The Red Devils won 5 - 2. Joe Ferguson scored the two Phoenix goals. Player of the day went to Kalani Henman who was awesome on defence.
In the 9th grade, Awakeri Athletic played well against St Josephs. Athletic lost 1 - 3. Their goal scorer was Joshua Spalding. Player of the day was Lucy Overdevest. She was an excellent goalie, preventing many goals being scored.
Cascade Charters Awakeri Raptors had another strong team effort in the 11th grade, this time against Plains Wanderers. Raptors took the game with a 6 - 0 win. Their player of the day was Cullen Brown, who put in a great defensive effort and had good positional play.
Also in the 11th grade, Awakeri Magic travelled to take on Opotiki Magpies Team One, who won 4 – 1. Ryan Lambert played goalie for Magic and saved some mean shots. Arran Dominick scored a goal that saw him run the length of field, beating three defenders and the goalie. Jayden Grindrod got player of the day again, showing very good field and ball skills.
In the 13th grade, Awakeri Ninjas played Tarawera and had a convincing win. In the second half, Brad Yuill and Sophie Growden kindly played for the opposition to help them out. Brad was player of the day, crossing and passing really well. The Ninjas team remained focused throughout. Summer Jones, Addison Dodson and Kobi Wetting were among the goal scorers.
