Awakeri's youngest teams, their 7th and 6th grades, had some very close exciting games on Saturday.
Awakeri Ninjas played Whakatane Sharks in the 13th grade won 6 - 0. The whole Ninjas team played really well as a unit. There was lots of good passing that led to goals. Cody Parsons was striking the ball well and scored a hat trick. The player of the day was Jamie Hawkes. He made great decisions on defence, passing when required and clearing if necessary. A lot of players are showing good improvement. Ninjas have the test of playing Foxy Feet this Saturday.
Cascade Charters Awakeri Raptors had a tough first half against Opotiki Magpies in the 11th grade, with no goals scored. In the second half Awakeri came out and put away two goals to win the game 2 - 0. The player of the day was Kieran Robinson for his effort, both on defence and attack. Also in the 11th grade, Awakeri Magic played Ohope Mako in a game between two equally matched sides. It was an open passing game, which the supporters loved watching. It was nil all at half time. In the second half Arran Dominick scored first for Magic, but Ohope managed to score twice to take the game 2 - 1. Ryan Lambert was Magic's player of the day for great defence and Alex Whiteman was named player of the month for his total commitment.
It was a derby in the 9th grade, with both Awakeri teams (Athletic and Mustangs) facing each other. In a hard fought game, the Mustangs eventually won 5 – 0. Awakeri Athletic played very well and are improving every week. Ash Kelly received their player of the day for outstanding defence and never stopping. Fergus Rowe was player of the day for the Mustangs.
Awakeri Phoenix played Whakatane Town Falcons in the 8th grade. Falcons won 6 - 0. Awakeri's player of the day went to Coby Rutledge for great defensive play.
Awakeri Rangers had two good games in the 7th grade. They are a team with plenty of energy and enthusiasm. They lost their first game 3 - 0 to a fantastic Kawerau United team. Their second game was a 1 - 1 draw with Awakeri United. Goal scorers were Anais Spalding for the Awakeri Rangers team and Tanner Willetts for the Awakeri United team. Isabella Mitton also got a great goal from kick-off which unfortunately couldn't be counted. The player of the day was Anais Spalding for her excellent ball control.
7th grade Awakeri United in GAME 1 - Allandale Panthers 2-2 Tanner and Josh scored the goals. In GAME 2 - Awakeri Rangers 1-1 Tanner scored the goal. Player of the Day – Tanner.
Also in the 7th grade, Awakeri Rascals were down to three players: Max Mead, McKenzie Nurkka and Braxton Semmens. All three played their hearts out, winning the first game 5 - 1 against Whakatane, and then drawing 2 - 2 against Allandale. Player of the Day went to Braxton Semmens for outstanding games and goals.
Awakeri Eagles also did well this week, winning both their games in the 6th grade. They played the Ohope Kingfish first, a 2 – 1 win. The second game was against Whakatane Town Dolphins. Eagles were leading 3 – 2 at the hooter but the Dolphins scored an extra time goal. All the Eagles' goals were scored by Mylee Mathews. Player of the day went to Harvey Ferguson for great team work and getting the ball up to the goal.
Also in the 6th grade, Awakeri Rovers had two great games. The first game was against Whakatane Town Force. The sides were pretty evenly matched and the goals were neck-and-neck. Unfortunately the Force scored the last goal of the game with only seconds to spare and Rovers were defeated 3 - 2. Ben Overdevest and Logan Owen scored the goals. The second game was against Kawerau Comets. It was another evenly matched game. The Kawerau Comets have showed amazing improvement Bay Day. Rovers won this game 3 - 1. Corbin James scored two excellent goals and player of the day Ben scored an amazing breakaway goal. Special mention to Scarlett Mead for always trying her hardest and having a great attitude.
6th grade Awakeri Aces 3 (Kyan x2, Jude x 1) - Allandale Allstars – 2.
Aces 6 (Kyan 4, Jude x 1, Temioha x 1) - Poroporo 2.
MVP: Kyan Krause; a range of attacking flair to score six across two games, as well as some incisive Eden Hazard-esque passing!
