All of Awakeri's soccer teams were playing at home on Saturday
and some hard fought battles ensued.
A very physical 13th grade premier division game between Awakeri Da Silva Autos
and Whakatane Celtic saw both teams put in a huge effort to try and win. Awakeri
keeper Matthew Richmond played a top game, to keep the final score to 3 - 1
win to Celtic. Brent Gurran played a blinder and came away with player of the
day. Vincent Sheather scored Awakeri's only goal.
Proactive Chairs Awakeri had a good game with Opotiki Magpies in the 13th grade
1st division. Awakeri scored twice through Joey Roia and Madison Constantine
and were unlucky on other occasions, with Magpies taking the game 3 - 2. Sydney
Jones was Awakeri's player of the match. On the downside, Matthew Fulton suffered
a serious ankle injury.
In an evenly fought match, the 11th grade premier division Private Asset Management
Awakeri Aces were 3 -1 winners over Ohope Crushers. Player of the day for Aces
was Alex Christensen, who defended well, making some great tackles and clearing
the ball confidently. Ben Fretwell scored a hat-trick. He was well supported
by Mark Morrison, who passed well. Zoe Johnston had her best game in defence
too.
In the 11th grade 1st division, CJ McIndoe Awakeri Dragons lost 2 - 0 to a strong
Kawerau team. Dragons were under pressure for most of the game. Their defence
Clive McIndoe, Mikaela Hancox and Jarrod Pinkerton all played very well, with
player of the match Shane Gow having an excellent game in goal.
Agritech Trailers Awakeri Knights put in another good team effort in their 9th
grade game against Opotiki Raiders. Bradley Bateson was named player of the
match after playing very well for his team and then the opposition in the second
half. Knights won the game 4 - 0.
In the 8th grade premier division, Galatea Vets Awakeri Jets repeated their
result against Whakatane Force from the first round, a 2 - 2 draw. Ethan Vincent's
improvement had him named player of the match. Nikoli Christensen scored the
goals, while Caleb Carter had another strong game.
Logan Wood used his new boots well in Awakeri Tigers 7th grade game against
Saints One, and was named player of the match. Joshua Ruiter played well too,
the game being a good battle and ended up a 0 - 0 draw.
7th grade Total Power Services Awakeri Sharks worked well as a team. Jalen Heberly
earned player of the day for good defence, with Daniel Gow. Sharks worked hard
but had a 2 - 0 loss to Paroa.
In the 6th grade, Agritech Trailers Awakeri played Saints and had lots of fun.
Awakeri came close to scoring. Jemma Sutton had her best game yet and was named
player of the match.
Performance Zone Awakeri Blues had a good 6th grade game against James Street
Grasshoppers. New player Lachlan Butler made his debut. Keely Forbes got player
of the match. Blues won 2 - 1, scoring the opposition's goal as well as their
own!
