A thrilling game in the 13th grade premier division was played between Da Silva
Awakeri Autos and Opotiki on Saturday. Autos probably played their best football
of the season and were unlucky to concede a goal in the last seconds of the
game. Both teams put on a top performance which had the spectators holding their
breath till the late winner. Autos player of the day Taylah Bateson played a
great game in defence, making Opotiki's task difficult. The final score Awakeri
Autos 0 Opotiki Franklinsteins 1.
After a run of narrow losses, the 11th grade premier division Private Asset
Management Awakeri Aces had an excellent 6 - 3 win over Ohope Crushers. Scorers
for Aces were Ben Fretwell (2), Mark Morrison (2), Terri-Anne Hollis, and Alex
Christensen. This was a terrific overall team performance, with all players
showing great determination to win tackles and also a willingness to pass. Players
of the day for Aces were Terri Anne Hollis and Thomas Attewell.
In the 11th grade 1st division, CJ McIndoe Awakeri Dragons had two game in two
days, both with similar results. A catch up game on Friday resulted in a 0 -
4 loss to Saints and in Saturday's match Kawerau took the game 5 - 0. Jarrod
Butler was player of the day for Dragons in both games with Shane Gow also in
top form.
In the 9th grade, Agritech Trailers Awakeri Knights cojntinued their excellent
form, beating the only team to have beaten them. Knights put it together well
as a team and used their wings to get the ball forward. Zac Fretwell's fearless
tackling earned him player of the day. Up front Sam McPherson was also showing
good skills. Knights won the game 8 - 0.
Galatea Vets Awakeri Jets won their 8th grade premier division game with Opotiki
4 - 1. Joshua Keightley was Jets player of the day. A Nikoli Christensen hat-trick
provided three of the goals, with Caleb Carter grabbing the fourth
Total Power Services Awakeri Rangers had a very hard 7th grade game against
Saints, losing heavily. Player of the day Bleyne Heberly almost scored with
a good run. His brother Jalen also played up to his best.
Also in the 7th grade, Awakeri Tigers had a 1 - 0 loss to a very fit well skilled
Kawerau team. The whole Tigers team put in a super effort, following the example
of player of the day Josh Ruiter.
Agritech Trailers Awakeri played a challenging game against Dallisons Kawerau
in the 6th grade. The strong Kawerau team proved a force to be reckoned with,
winning 7-0. Christian Van der Gulik's excellent defensive play earned him player
of the match. Brayden Phillips and Jack Du Toit also played well for Awakeri.
