Awakeri's soccer teams were involved in lots of exciting action on Saturday.
There was plenty of pace in the 13th grade premier division game between Da Silva Awakeri Autos and Edgecumbe. Both teams showed off their ball skills with attacking play. Goals scored by Jayden Haddock, Guy Kamphorst, Matthew Reeves and Vincent Sheather earned Autos a convincing win. Autos player of the match went to Guy Kamphorst, for holding his position well and featuring in some of the goals.
Good positional play and passing was a feature of Proactive Chairs Awakeri's game against Otakiri in the 13th grade 1st division. Otakiri were short of players and Joel Ingle kindly agreed to help them out. Lindsey Cotter scored twice for Awakeri with Madison Constantine also coming close. Otakiri used the fast break well to put away five goals. The Awakeri team shared the player of the match award for their teamwork.
In the 11th grade premier division, Private Asset Management Awakeri Aces had a good start to the season, even though they were well beaten by Ohope Harriers. Down two goals after only five minutes, the home supporters feared a big score might be on the cards. Others to play well were Ben Fretwell and Mark Morrison. The final score was 4 - 0 to Ohope.
James Street Vipers turned up rather short handed for their 11th grade 1st division match with CJ McIndoe Awakeri Dragons. A shuffle round of players resulted in a good spirited game, with Dragons coming out the winners 1 - 0. Matthew Eveleens sportingly played the whole game for the Vipers.
In the 9th grade, Agritech Trailers Awakeri Knights were a little lethargic to start off their game at Thornton. There was a definite sign of tiredness from school camp amongst some of the players. Knights were at their best when the ball was played up the wings and then centered. That was how the first goal was scored by Toby Kirkpatrick. Joshua Klein Ovink made a couple of really good saves in goal. The score stayed at 1 - 0 till half time. The Knights team gelled well during the second half, with two goals being shot home by Jordan Sutton. The player of the match was Zac Fretwell, who was outstanding in defence clearing the ball several times from dangerous situations. The final score was 3 - 0 to Knights.
Galatea Vets Awakeri Jets didn't create too many chances in their 8th grade premier league game with Whakatane Giants. Despite the best efforts of Jets player of the match, goalie Tyrin Penberth, Giants managed to grab a winner and take the game 1 - 0. Nikoli Christensen and Shane Hope also had good games for the Jets.
