Four goals was a common ingredient in the results of Awakeri's soccer teams
on Saturday.
A well played 13th grade premier division game saw Kawerau come away with a
4 - 1 win over Awakeri Da Silva Autos. Awakeri fired many good shots at Kawerau's
goal but failed to hit the back of the net. Frustration at this had Awakeri
starting to make too many mistakes. This left player of the match Liam Richards
to make some top defensive play, stopping Kawerau scoring more goals. Jayden
Haddock scored Awakeri's only goal.
Proactive Chairs Awakeri had an enjoyable game in the 13th grade 1st division
against Whakatane Rangers. Shaun Musgrave's excellent work in defence had him
named player of the match. Backing him up, Miles Saitta and Cameron Rio-Kumeroa
had good games in their turns in goal. Rangers won the game 2 - 0.
After being 3 goals down at half time, the 11th grade Private Asset Management
Awakeri Aces got their game together, and managed a 3 - 3 result against Whakatane
Cheetahs. Ben Fretwell scored another hat-trick, to earn player of the day.
In the 11th grade 1st division, CJ McIndoe secured a 4 - 0 win against Whakatane
Wolves. Matthew Eveleens excelled in goal, making a couple of great saves and
earning the player of the match award. Dean Frost (2), Jarrod Butler, and Jesse
Ingle scored the goals.
Agritech Trailers Awakeri Knights turned on some lovely passing and positional
play in their 9th grade game against Thornton. Player of the match Cameron Morrison
scored a goal, as did the hard-working Sam McPherson and Jordan Sutton put away
the other two, in a 4 - 0 win.
In the 8th grade, Galatea Vets Awakeri Jets all enjoyed their game, despite
losing to the strong Whakatane Giants side 3 - 1. Alec Hunt's steady improvement
had him named player of the match. Shane Hope put in another good performance,
while Joshua Keightley grabbed the Jets goal.
In the 7th grade, Total Power Services Awakeri Sharks had an awesome game against
Ohope with a 1 all draw. Mekaela Learmond got player of the match for working
hard, Dillon Murray also showed good ball skills.
Awakeri Tigers used their teamwork to pass the ball around well and earn a 4
- 0 win against Ohope in the 7th grade. Tom Holani scored all four goals, two
of which were set up by player of the match Liam Sanson.
Agritech Trailers Awakeri played a challenging game against the Ohope Stormers
in the 6th grade. Awakeri had a strong first half but Ohope fought back in the
second. The resulting score was 4 - 4. Sophia Van der Gulik's impressive skills
as goalie earned her player of the match. Sean Young also had a fantastic game,
scoring three of the goals for Awakeri.
Also in the 6th grade, Performance Zone Awakeri Blues did well against Ohope
Wanderers, coming away with a 2 - 1 win. Top performers were player of the match
Ollie Clements, and Quest Tipping.
