The end of the season is nigh for Awakeri's soccer teams. The different grades come to an end over the next two weeks. As usual, most games were close.
The exception to this was a comfortable win to Da Silva Awakeri Autos in the 13th grade premier division. Autos, despite missing several players, accounted for James Street Rebels 6 - 1. James Holani kept the defence solid with some strong headers and good distribution. Pete Dowden also excelled in the midfield. Jayden Haddock and Robert Sonntag were the goal scorers for Autos.
In the 13th grade 1st division, Proactive Chairs Awakeri had a brilliant game with Whakatane Rangers, with a vocal crowd supporting the teams. Rangers scored an early goal in each half and try as Awakeri did, they couldn't put away the equalisers. The Awakeri team shared player of the day honours, with Destrii Prout, David Ernest and Rhys Cram in particularly good form.
In a close exciting close game, the 11th grade Private Asset Management Awakeri Aces had a great 2 - 0 win over Whakatane Cheetahs in the premier division. Leah Sheather found her goal scoring form to knock in both goals. Players of the day for Aces were Zoe Johnston and Alex Christensen. This was a satisfying way for Aces to finish their season.
Being evenly matched was certainly the story for the 11th grade 1st division teams CJ McIndoe Awakeri Dragons and Whakatane Wolves. The game was in the balance at 0 - 0 before two late Wolves goals brought them a 2 - 0 win. Clive McIndoe set up good chances for Dragons with his work down the wing, and player of the day David Klein Ovink came very close to scoring.
Whakatane Boosters put up a real challenge to Agritech Trailers Awakeri Knights in the 9th grade 1st division. Knights won a tight game 2 - 1 with Daniel Reeves player of the day for his excellent positional play. Toby Kirkpatrick, Sam McPherson and Joshua Keightley all did very well too. Boosters worked hard in defence to keep the Knights at bay and they had a couple of decent strikes at goal too.
In the 8th grade premier division Galatea Vets Awakeri Jets beat Otakiri 2 - 1. Hunger for the ball earned Caleb Carter player of the day. Nikoli Christensen scored the goals for Jets, and Alec Hunt also had a good game.
Awakeri Tigers enjoyed their outing to Opotiki for a fast and furious 7th grade game. It was a one all draw with James Thompson scoring for Tigers. Their player of the day was Daniel Perkinson, who used his big kick well.
Total Power Services Awakeri Sharks had a good game against Whakatane Wasps in the 7th grade. Sharks had a 4 - 1 win. Player of the day Samantha Looney was enthusiastic and hard working.
Performance Zone Awakeri Blues enjoyed their 6th grade game against Paroa. The final score was 3 - 2 to Paroa Jacob Davis got player of the day for his excellent goal keeping. Jenna Wilson played very well and Taylor Harte got the Blues' goals.
Agritech Trailers Awakeri played Saints Two in the 6th grade. Saints Two's excellent attacking skills resulted in their 3 - 1 win. Aroha Millar and Brayden Phillips shared player of the match for Awakeri. Brayden had a fantastic game, scoring the goal for Awakeri and Aroha was outstanding in the second half as goalie. Jemma Sutton also did very well.
