Awakeri's soccer teams go into the holiday break on the back of some exciting
games.
Excellent teamwork paved the way for Da Silva Awakeri Autos win against James
Street in the 13th grade premier division. Good passing and some strong headers
were features as Autos took the lead 2 -1 at half time and then powered away
to a 7 - 1 win. Vincent Sheather was player of the match.
Proactive Chairs Awakeri had plenty of opportunities in their 13th grade 1st
division game against Otakiri, while their opponents used theirs well. Riki
Roia was player of the match for some excellent work in goal and a good effort
in the midfield. Supersub Madison Constantine came on to set up Lindsey Cotter
for a late goal. Destrii Prout worked hard in the midfield too, but Otakiri
took the game 4 - 1.
Playing their best soccer of the season, the 11th grade Private Asset Management
Awakeri Aces were very unlucky to lose 2 - 0 against Ohope Harriers in a premier
division game. In a great all round team performance, it was very difficult
to pick a player of the day. Caleb Sheather and Mark Morrison were two standouts
for Aces, with Zoe Johnston and Terri-Anne Hollis also having strong games.
Aces passed well and supported each other, making for an exciting and enjoyable
game.
James Street scored a first minute goal against CJ McIndoe Awakeri Dragons with
an unstoppable shot, and the score stayed that way till the end in their 11th
grade 1st division match. Jarrod Pinkerton's good tackles earned him player
of the match. Renko Barkema and Dean Frost, in his last game for Awakeri, also
did well.
In the 8th grade premier division, Galatea Vets Awakeri Jets had a good even
battle with Otakiri. Player of the match Joshua Keightley and Caleb Carter scored
the goals in a 2 - 2 draw. Tiaan Brownless also impressed for the Jets.
Total Power Awakeri Sharks had a good game and lots of fun in the 7th grade,
but had a 2-0 loss to James Street Giants. Daniel Gow received player of the
day for some brilliant saves in goal.
Agritech Trailers Awakeri all played well and continue to show good skills development.
They met Whakatane Thunderbirds in the 6th grade and won 5 - 2. Christian Van
der Gulik was named player of the match, while Shannon Frost also did well in
her final game in New Zealand.
Also in the 6th grade, Whakatane Raptors were too quick for Performance Zone
Awakeri Blues, winning 5 - 1. Korben Wilson was Blues player of the match. Taylor
Harte and Quest Tipping showed good skills on the field too.
