Awakeri's soccer teams go into the holiday break on the back of some exciting games.
Excellent teamwork paved the way for Da Silva Awakeri Autos win against James Street in the 13th grade premier division. Good passing and some strong headers were features as Autos took the lead 2 -1 at half time and then powered away to a 7 - 1 win. Vincent Sheather was player of the match.
Proactive Chairs Awakeri had plenty of opportunities in their 13th grade 1st division game against Otakiri, while their opponents used theirs well. Riki Roia was player of the match for some excellent work in goal and a good effort in the midfield. Supersub Madison Constantine came on to set up Lindsey Cotter for a late goal. Destrii Prout worked hard in the midfield too, but Otakiri took the game 4 - 1.
Playing their best soccer of the season, the 11th grade Private Asset Management Awakeri Aces were very unlucky to lose 2 - 0 against Ohope Harriers in a premier division game. In a great all round team performance, it was very difficult to pick a player of the day. Caleb Sheather and Mark Morrison were two standouts for Aces, with Zoe Johnston and Terri-Anne Hollis also having strong games. Aces passed well and supported each other, making for an exciting and enjoyable game.
James Street scored a first minute goal against CJ McIndoe Awakeri Dragons with an unstoppable shot, and the score stayed that way till the end in their 11th grade 1st division match. Jarrod Pinkerton's good tackles earned him player of the match. Renko Barkema and Dean Frost, in his last game for Awakeri, also did well.
In the 8th grade premier division, Galatea Vets Awakeri Jets had a good even battle with Otakiri. Player of the match Joshua Keightley and Caleb Carter scored the goals in a 2 - 2 draw. Tiaan Brownless also impressed for the Jets.
Total Power Awakeri Sharks had a good game and lots of fun in the 7th grade, but had a 2-0 loss to James Street Giants. Daniel Gow received player of the day for some brilliant saves in goal.
Agritech Trailers Awakeri all played well and continue to show good skills development. They met Whakatane Thunderbirds in the 6th grade and won 5 - 2. Christian Van der Gulik was named player of the match, while Shannon Frost also did well in her final game in New Zealand.
Also in the 6th grade, Whakatane Raptors were too quick for Performance Zone Awakeri Blues, winning 5 - 1. Korben Wilson was Blues player of the match. Taylor Harte and Quest Tipping showed good skills on the field too.
