Awakeri's soccer teams were pleased to be back after the holiday break, and the weather was also in top form.
A two nil lead at half time was the result of a very good performance from Awakeri Da Silva Autos against Ohope in the 13th grade premier division, but two good goals from Ohope had them back in the game in the second half. The final score was 2 - all. Auto's player of the match went to Mathew Orr-McKeown, for his great defence. Sam Schuler and Jayden Haddock scored for Awakeri.
In the 13th grade 1st division, Proactive Chairs Awakeri put it together well against Opotiki Gold. Good work from player of the match Rhys Cram in the midfield and speedy winger David Ernest allowed Oliver Butler, Lindsey Cotter, Madison Constantine and Riki Roia to score in what turned out to be a comfortable win.
The 11th grade Private Asset Management Awakeri Aces came up against the Opotiki Panthers in the premier division. Right from the kick off it was obvious that both teams were very even. Aces scored first through Ben Fretwell, after some good passing. They held this advantage till the first minute of the second half, when Panthers scored after Aces couldn't clear the ball. The game looked headed for a draw, until a minute from time when Panthers scored. Players of the day were Cameron Elmsly and Thomas Attewell. Both covered a lot of ground and passed the ball well.
In the 11th grade 1st division, CJ McIndoe Awakeri Dragons played well against Opotiki Barcelonas and created a number of chances. However, Opotiki was the team to score and grab a 1 - 0 win. Dragons forward Luke Matchitt was player of the match.
Good crosses from play down the wings made for a good result in the 9th grade game between Agritech Trailers Awakeri Knights and Paroa. Sam McPherson was named player of the match, with Zac Fretwell also in top form as Knights ran out the winners 8 - 1.
Being first to the ball earned player of the match for Tiaan Brownless in the 8th grade premier game between Saints and Galatea Vets Awakeri Jets. Good saves from Tyrin Penberth kept Saints out, and at the other end Nikoli Christensen (3), Shane Hope and Caleb Carter scored the goals for Jets to win 5 - 0.
Awakeri Tigers had a fun game against Te Teko in the 7th grade. The two teams played in a friendly spirit, with player of the match James Thompson scoring the only goal. The score was 1 - 0 to the Tigers.
Also in the 7th grade, Total Power Services Awakeri Sharks lost 0 - 3 to Thornton. Blayne Heberley ran hard all game and was named player of the match
Agritech Trailers Awakeri played an action-packed game against the Whakatane Wanderers in the 6th grade. The resulting score was 1 - 0 to the Wanderers. Player of the match went to Sophia Van der Gulik for her valiant attempts at goal and excellent defence. Aroha Miller also had a great game as Awakeri's goalie.
Performance Zone Awakeri Blues had an even battle with Thornton in the 6th grade and enjoyed their game despite losing 1 - 2. Quest Tipping was Blues player of the match, while Josh Shakes and Jacob Davies continue to develop their games well.
