A 17 goal thriller in the 11th grade was one of Awakeri's soccer teams' highlights on Saturday.
In the 13th grade 1st division, Proactive Chairs Awakeri had a rather fortunate 3 - 1 win against Whakatane Cheetahs. Harry Cotter shone in the Awakeri defence and was named player of the match. Lindsey Cotter (2) and Miles Saitta were the scorers.
With a 12 - 5 result, you could have been confused in thinking it may have been a rugby game, but the 11th grade Private Asset Management Awakeri Aces went down by this score to a skilful Saints One team. Ben Fretwell was outstanding for Aces, scoring five goals, often beating several players in his attacks on goal. Supporters of both teams were treated to some great goals. Even though well beaten, Aces battled hard with only eight players. Fretwell was the obvious choice for player of the day. Terri Anne Hollis and Thomas Attewell did well too, making some good tackles.
In the 11th grade 1st division, CJ McIndoe Awakeri Dragons enjoyed their game with Otakiri. Dragons created lots of chances, converting one of them to get a 1 - 1 draw. Player of the match Dean Frost scored the goal, a reward for his good attacking play.
Agritech Trailers Awakeri Knights played very well as a team in their 9th grade game against Paroa. Good passing and positional play led to an 8 - 0 win, although the Paroa keeper shone in the second half. Daniel Reeves was named player of the match, while Jordan Sutton, Cameron Morrison, Sam McPherson and Zac Fretwell scored the goals.
Galatea Vets Awakeri Jets got a bit frustrated with their 8th grade premier division game with a Saints team that played well. Nikoli Christensen earned player of the match with another good effort. Shane Hope and the improving Ethan Vincent also performed well. Saints won the game 2 - 0.
In the 7th grade, Total Power Services Awakeri Sharks had an awesome game against Allandale. The Sharks all played well, with Bleyne Heberly earning player of the match for keeping pressure on the other team. The game ended in a 1- 1 draw.
Awakeri Tigers had their first loss in the 7th grade, 0 - 2 to Whakatane Wasps. Ronnie Martens got right into the action and was player of the match for Tigers. Maraea Porter had another strong game and James Thompson showed off some fancy footwork in the midfield.
Agritech Trailers Awakeri played an action packed game against Paroa in the 6th grade. The final score was 2 - 1 to Awakeri. Player of the match went to Jack Du Toit for his impressive play as goalie. Jamie Findlay also had a fantastic game, scoring a goal for Awakeri.
Also in the 6th grade, Performance Zone Awakeri Blues had a good game at Allandale. The final score was around 8 - 0 to Awakeri. The Blues players are improving rapidly, with Jacob Davies named player of the match.
