Awakeri's soccer teams enjoyed more wins than losses in Saturday's
soccer action.
A determined Awakeri Autos team took to the field looking for a win against
Kawerau in the 13th grade premier division. After last week's average performance,
Autos played with more sting and came away with a 2 - 1 win. The player of the
match was Matthew Reeves, who played keeper. He was in top form, saving many
attempts at goal by Kawerau.
Vincent Sheather, Guy Kamphorst, Sam Schuler and Pete Dowden combined well on
attack, with goals being scored by Sheather and Schuler. The midfield and defence
kept Kawerau under control till the final whistle.
In the 13th grade 1st division, Proactive Chairs Awakeri did well against Whakatane
Cheetahs. Keeper Destrii Prout had little to do in the first half, as Awakeri
got out to a 3 - 0 nil lead. Miles Saitta was named player of the match and
he played a good part in a 7 - 0 final score. Goals were scored by Lindsey Cotter
(2), Madison Constantine (2), Riki Roia (2) and Sydney Jones.
The 11th grade Private Asset Management Awakeri Aces came up against the top
team in the premier division. Although Aces played their best soccer of the
season, they eventually lost 2 - 0 to Saints. Leah Sheather and Zoe Johnston
were players of the match for Aces. Both defended well and were able to link
well with their forwards. Ben Fretwell also had his usual strong game. Aces
could have easily stolen a draw, with Mark Morrison having a couple of great
shots saved off the Saints line.
CJ McIndoe Awakeri Dragons played with good team structure against Otakiri in
the 11th grade 1st division. Chris Walker earned player of the match. He was
well supported by midfielder Clive McIndoe and attacker David Klein-Ovink. The
final score was a 0 - 0 draw.
Agritech Trailers Awakeri Knights played very well as a team against Thornton
in the 9th grade. With the Knights up 4 - 0 at half time, they swapped positions
around and enjoyed the variety. Toby Kirkpatrick played up to his best and was
named player of the match. Bradley Bateson and Daniel Reeves continued their
good form on the wings too.
In the 8th grade premier division, Galatea Vets Awakeri Jets had a good game
with Whakatane Giants. A Nikoli Christensen goal had Jets at 1 - 1 with Giants
at half time, however the Whakatane team scored a second half winner. Jordan
Sutton's good work had him named player of the match. Tiaan Brownless, Shane
Hope and keeper TJ Penberth all shone for Jets.
In the 7th grade, Awakeri Tigers played Edgecumbe at Matata. Both teams had
to work hard in cold conditions, and the game ended up 1 - 1. Tom Holani got
Tigers' goal. Player of the match Logan Wood was a real dynamo. The Tigers team
is lifting themselves every week.
Excellent passing by the Total Power Services Awakeri Rangers 7th grade team
set them up for a 4 - 1 win against Rangitaiki Rangers. Joey Flanagan scored
all four goals. He was ably assisted by player of the match Daniel Gow, who
set up two of the goals with good passing.
In the 6th grade Performance Zone Awakeri Blues had a good game with AIE Kawerau.
Lachlan Butler was Blues' player of the match. Taylor Harte and Jacob Davis
played well too.
