Awakeri's teams were pleased to get the soccer league fixtures underway on Saturday.
In the 13th grade premiere division, Da Silva Awakeri Autos played perennial
high fliers Whakatane Celtic. A fast game from the kick off had both teams showing
off their skills, with the game flowing up and down the field for the first
20 minutes. Celtic then slotted a couple of quick goals and by half time had
a 4 nil lead. Two goals by Mathew Reeves reduced the margin and two near misses
by Vincent Sheather kept the spectators interested. But Celtic kept the pressure
on to pull away to a 6 - 2 win. Player of the match for Autos was Pete Dowden,
who ran all day.
Proactive Chairs Awakeri met a strong Kawerau side in the 13th grade 1st division.
Kawerau had a comfortable 12 - 0 win, but the Awakeri players stuck to their
positions well and showed a good positive spirit. Rhys Cram's solid work in
defence earned him player of the match.
In the 8th grade premiere division, Galatea Vets Awakeri Jets put together a
sound game to draw 2 - 2 with The Force Whakatane. Caleb Carter and Nikoli Christensen
scored for Jets, with Christensen earning player of the match for his work as
goalkeeper in the first half. Shane Hope and Joshua Keightley also had good
games.
Awakeri Tigers had a great game with Otakiri Pirates in the 7th grade. Fine
weather and good soccer kept everyone happy. Tigers and Pirates drew 1 - 1.
Tigers' goal was scored by Tom Holani. The player of the match was Daniel Perkinson,
Liam Sanson was very impressive also.
Total Power Awakeri Sharks had an awesome 7th grade game with Edgecumbe. Dillon
Murray's hard work gave him the player of the match. Sharks defended well to
keep the score down to 2 - 0 to Edgecumbe.
The Agritech Trailers Awakeri 6th grade team played a nail-biting game against
Otakiri. The excellent defensive skills displayed by both teams resulted in
a nil all score. Shannon Frost proved to be a force to be reckoned with as the
Awakeri goalie. She received player of the match for her outstanding effort.
The grit and determination shown by these youngsters so early into their first
season of soccer is very impressive.
Awakeri's other four teams, for various reasons, had no games and will be champing
at the bit to play this coming Saturday.
