Improved performances were the order of the day when Awakeri's soccer teams played their second round of games on Saturday.
Bright sunshine greeted Awakeri Rovers on Saturday, as they ran on to the pitch to meet the challenge of playing Saints B in the 6th grade. Rovers were quickly into their stride, making the early pressure count by scoring two goals in the first quarter of the game. Front runners Jacob Hannah, Lachlan Butler and Danyon Arrol worked hard and kept the Saints defence under sustained pressure: chances were well taken, resulting in a good win. Player of the day was a difficult decision, with Cody Baker-Bragg, Danyon, Jacob and Ollie Clements in contention. The 'panel of 4', finally gave Ollie the vote for his first time hard work and his brave saves in the second half.
Also in the 6th grade, Kawerau gained revenge on Awakeri Rockets, with a 4 - nil win. Jessie Hollis was player of the day for Rockets.
Awakeri T-Rexes played Allandale Hawks in the 6th grade. Mathew Webb scored three goals and was named player of the day. Gemma Sutton played very well in goal too. T-Rexes lost 4 - 3 but showed definite improvement. They're also having fun and loving their practices, especially that great soccer drill 'What's the time Mr Wolf'!
Awakeri 7th Grade Galatea Vets White Pointers played James Street Fireballs in their second game of the season. Awakeri showed excellent attacking skills and a strong defence, ending the game ended with a 6 - 3 win. Player of the day was Sophia Van der Gulik. Brayden Phillips and Sean Young also played very well.
Performance Zone Awakeri Blues had a good 7th grade game on Saturday, being evenly matched with Thornton. Blues drew 2 all and Danielle Hammond was the player of the day.
In the 8th grade premier division, Awakeri Tigers had a good battle with Ohope Troopers. Dylan Hoefsloot is impressing in his first year of soccer, and he earned the player of the day award. Lucas Schlepers and Tom Holani scored the goals in a 2 - 6 loss.
Awakeri Sharks had a good game with Te Teko in the 8th grade, taking the win 2 - 1. Bleyne Heberly was named player of the day for Sharks.
Da Silva Autos Awakeri Jets had an entertaining 4 - 6 loss in the 9th grade premier division. The well performed Whakatane Giants grabbed the win, despite the excellent efforts of player of the day Jamie Arrol in goal. Nikoli Christensen and Caleb Carter shared the goals for Jets.
In the 11th grade premier division, Awakeri Macattacks had a slow start, but an improved second half against Ohope United. The Macattacks got their passing going better and came close with some good runs down the wing from Sam McPherson. Zac Fretwell and Rory MacGregor did well in their turns in goal, while player of the day Luke Matchitt stuck to his task well in the midfield. Ohope won the game 8 - 0.
Jim's Saddlery Awakeri Knights had a convincing win against James Street Raptors in the 11th grade 1st division. It was a good team effort, with defender Joshua Klein-Ovink named player of the day for his sound tackling.
The 13th grade CJ McIndoe's Awakeri Dragons had an improved performance in their game with Saints. Player of the day for Dragons was Ben Fretwell, who competed in every tackle, and looked dangerous on attack. Others to have good games were Leah Sheather and captain Sam Schuler. Even though the final score was 7 - 0 in favour of Saints, all the Awakeri team improved from last week, especially in their defensive play.
Also in the 13th grade, Private Asset Management Awakeri Aces downed Whakatane Orcas 3 - 1. Goalkeeper Cameron Rio-Kumeroa was player of the day, and the scorers were Jayden Haddock (2) and Guy Kamphorst.
In the 15th grade, Proactive Chairs Awa-Edge found it hard to get their newly combined team working cohesively. They were well beaten by Ohope, 11 - 1, but player of the day Madison Constantine set a good example, trying hard to link the play together. Luke Overworth was the scorer.
