The feature of Saturday's results for Awakeri's soccer teams was the high scoring draw in the 13th grade.
The CJ McIndoe's Awakeri Dragons had a very entertaining match with Whakatane Rangers. With the score 4 - 0 to Rangers after twenty minutes, things weren't looking good for Dragons. However, their defence suddenly started working, in response to some great work by their forwards who managed to score two quick goals. The Dragons suddenly realised they had a great chance to win and were finishing the stronger, with Ben Fretwell (4 goals) and Sam Schuler the scorers. The final score was 6 - 6, a fair result for both teams. Caleb Sheather and Sam Schuler were the players of the day for Dragons.
In the 11th grade 1st division, Jim's Saddlery Awakeri Knights had a comfortable 6 - 0 win against an improved Thornton side. Chris Walker did well in defence and was named player of the day. Josh Klein Ovink (2), Sam Burgess (2) and Kurt Turpie (2) were the scorers.
Awakeri Jets put it together well in their 9th grade premier division game with Saints, edging out on top 2 - 1. Player of the day Tyrin Penberth and Caleb Carter were the scorers.
An excellent 8th grade premier game was fought out between Awakeri Tigers and Otakiri. Both teams played good football. Joshua Ruiter had his best game for a long time, scored a goal and was named player of the day. Aaron Fretwell was also in top form for Tigers. The game ended at 2 - 2.
In the 8th grade 1st division, Awakeri Sharks had a 2 - 1 loss against Allandale Jets. Samantha Looney earned player of the day for excellent ball skills and trying her best. Dillon Murray also had a good game, scoring the Sharks' only goal.
Awakeri 7th Grade Soccer Galatea Vets White Pointers played a good game against the Rangitaiki Rockets. Sean Young and Jamie Findlay scored the goals. The score finished at a 3 - 0 win for Awakeri. The whole team played exceptionally well, working together well. The player of the day was Sean Young.
Also in the 7th grade, Performance Zone Awakeri Blues had no subs for their game against Saints. They played hard, with Felicity Klein Ovink player of the day. Saints eventually won the game 8 - 2.
Awakeri Rockets had to borrow a few players to make up the numbers for their 6th grade game against Allandale Hawks. They battled away well, with Marshall McGuire player of the day. Hawks won the game 3 - 1.
Awakeri Rovers faced two challenges on Saturday; a rain sodden pitch and their keenest opposition so far this season Allandale Eagles. It was a good contest between equally matched 6th grade teams. Cody Baker-Bragg kept goal well in the first half; his firm kicking from goal, prompted some good attacks. Player of the day Jacob Davis, was prominent in attack and defence, throughout the game. Jacob Hannah was tireless up front too. Tired legs and no goals meant a 0 - 0 draw at full time: a well contested game on a difficult surface.
Also in the 6th grade, Awakeri T-Rex had a great game with Saints. There were plenty of attacking opportunities. Emily Julian, Tara van Beekhuizen, Jemma Sutton and Mathew Webb all had great runs. Zoe Bennett has been improving well, while Taryn Forbes loves practices!
