The big news of the weekend for Awakeri Soccer was the first win of the season for Proactive Chairs Awa-Edge in the 15th grade. Awa-Edge have been on the receiving end of weekly hidings this season, their 'best' result a 0 -7 loss. On Saturday an excellent first half had them leading 2 - 0 at Opotiki with goals to Luke Overworth. The defence did a good job pushing up and restricting Opotiki. In the second half the home team came back, hitting the woodwork and scoring a goal, but Awa-Edge scrambled well under pressure and held on for the memorable 2 - 1 win. Madison Constantine's good passing from the midfield saw him named player of the day. The Opotiki supporters showed good sportsmanship in congratulating Awa-Edge on their victory.
In the 13th grade, Private Asset Management Awakeri Aces had a good fast flowing game with Whakatane Rangers. Aces got out to a handy lead before letting Rangers back in. The final score was a rather improbable 7 - 5 win for Aces. Here's coach Paul's comments:
Another great game this week against Whakatane. Whakatane have certainly put in some work following our 7-3 win against them at the start of the season. The Aces got off to a good start and managed to keep the ball in the oppositions half of the field for the first 15 minutes of the game and were rewarded with 3 goals. That’s when Whakatane decided that enough was enough!! They seem to instantly pick up the pace and piled on the pressure. The Aces were made to work very hard in defense but in the gaps between defending managed to gain a further 2 goals. Whakatane never gave up and managed to break through, finding the back of the net a total of 4 times before the half time whistle. In the second half, the game became very intense with around 50-50 possession. The Aces played really well together and managed to secure a further 2 goals through teamwork. The final score was 7-5 to the Aces. Goal scorers were Jayden Haddock (5), Guy Kamphorst (1) and Alex Christensen (1- you should have seen his face light up!!!!). Player of the day was Guy for his superb team spirit in passing the ball at every opportunity – well done Guy.
Thanks to some outstanding goalkeeping by player of the day, Alex Albright, CJ McIndoe's Awakeri Dragons went to half time with the scores locked nil all in their 13th grade clash with Whakatane Orcas. Dragons had defended well, and had also looked dangerous in attack. Unfortunately in the second half, they couldn't reproduce their previous form, and went down 4 - 0. For Dragons, Pete Dowden had a great game in midfield and Mikaela Hancox and Jarrod Butler defended well.
Awakeri Macattacks played their best soccer of the season in their 11th grade premier division game against Opotiki. Macattacks put their passes and positional play together well, but were undone by a very good Opotiki striker, who was the difference. Ollie Richmond was player of the day, with Kale Young also in good form in defence. Goal scorer Ash Roozendaal combined well with Sam McPherson and Daniel Reeves up front. Opotiki won the game 4 - 1.
Despite having players missing, Jim's Saddlery Awakeri Knights played a good team game to win 2 - 1 against Saints. Saints came back late in the game to keep things interesting. Brooke Theobald earned player of the day, attacking the ball well in defence. Samuel Burgess continued his good form. He and Kurt Turpie scored the goals. Josh Klein Ovink also did well in goal.
In her last game before moving back south, Coree Riley was named player of the day for 9th grade Awakeri Jets. Nikoli Christensen's goal secured Jets a 1 - 1 draw with Otakiri. Tiaan Brownless had another good game for Jets, and TJ Penberth made some good saves in goal.
In the 8th grade premier division, Awakeri Tigers lost 1 - 4 to Opotiki. Goal scorer Tom Holani was also player of the day.
Awakeri Sharks had a good 8th grade game, although it was a 2 - 0 loss, to Kawerau. Karaitiana Taipeti was named player of the day for working hard at defending and having a huge boot!
In the 7th grade Awakeri Galatea Vets White Pointers played a very hard game against the Performance Zone Awakeri Blues. The two teams were very evenly matched, however the Blues came through with a goal in injury time to snatch a 2 - 1 victory. Pointers' player of the day was Sean Young for his great attacking skills and an excellent goal. Georgia Robinson-Kearns also played extremely well, showing some determined defence against a strong attacking side. For the Blues, Quest Tipping impressed, scoring both goals. Keely Forbes was Blues player of the day for her commitment and good clearances of the ball.
Awakeri Rovers continued their winning streak in the 6th grade in their home fixture on Saturday. Good first half pressure from Rovers led to a melee in the Paroa Totara goal area, which resulted in an 'own goal', no further goals were scored, and Rovers led 1 - 0 at half time. Eager to improve their score, Rovers continued to pressure Paroa Totara in the second half. An excellent throw in by Cody Baker-Bragg, was latched upon by Danyon Arrol, who scored an excellent goal, mid-way through the second half. Every Rovers player worked hard, and were 2 - 0 worthy winners. Samantha Eivers was nominated player of the day.
Awakeri T-Rex had another great 6th grade game this week, an end to end game with Kawerau. Their player of the day was Emily Julian who did a great job of securing the ball and dribbling it in the right direction.
Also in the 6th grade, Awakeri Rockets came up against a strong Te Teko team. Chanel Crawley-Anderson did very well in her half as goalkeeper. Player of the day Isaiah Davidson stayed out of the bunch and showed good positional sense. Te Teko won the game 5 - 0.
